Miranda Live: Cory Bernardi says Tony Abbott can bring Liberal supporters back

CORY Bernardi has backed his former party leader as the only person who could save the Liberal Party from its own mess with speculation Malcolm Turnbull could soon face a challenge to his leadership — listen to the interview.

CORY Bernardi has waded into the mess encompassing his former colleagues, putting Tony Abbott forward to reclaim the Liberal Party leadership.

Cory Bernardi believes the Coalition is “running towards a cliff”.

The Australian Conservatives Senator, who defected from the Liberal Party in early 2017, pointed to a decade of government instability and said the situation didn’t look good for the Prime Minister.

“We all know how this plays out, it doesn’t end happily for Malcolm Turnbull,” Mr Bernardi told Miranda Live.

“The Coalition is not walking towards a cliff, it is running as fast as it can towards an electorate cliff”.

Mr Bernardi told Miranda Live host Miranda Devine he thinks “Tony Abbott might have a role to play” if the PM loses the top job.

“Whether that’s as a significant part of a Dutton-led cabinet or even maybe leading a charge to take the role from the Prime Minister, I think he could be a decisive player”, he said.

“I have a personal view Tony Abbott is the only person that could actually bring the base fully back.”
