Students’ art displayed after NT’s first NAIDOC poster competition

Students will see their art displayed in the Top End after an inaugural NAIDOC poster competition. See one of the winning posters.

The first winners of the Education Department’s inaugural NAIDOC poster competition have been revealed.

The competition called on artists from any NT government school to paint what the 2024 NAIDOC theme – Keep the fire burning: Blak, loud, and proud – meant to them.

Centralian Middle School’s Class 8.7 students took out the Overall Middle Years category with their poster.

Wanguri Primary School student Jayda Shona won the Primary Years category and Neutral Junction School student Jaserish Bonney won the Early Years category.

Category winners receive a $500 voucher for their school to purchase art supplies, while regional winners will be awarded a $200 voucher.

Education Department Chief Executive Karen Weston – who helped judge the posters – said the competition was an opportunity for students to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s culture.

Ms Weston said it also showcased students’ talent.

“The quality of artwork our students have created is astonishing, we have some incredibly talented young people in the Territory,” she said.

The winning posters will be displayed in the Darwin Mitchell Centre building.
