MAFS: ‘Dirty’ truth about Olivia Frazer’s OnlyFans backflip

The MAFS alum was labelled a “hypocrite” for selling nudes after “slut shaming” her co-star – but there’s a darker issue at play.

Olivia Frazer has defended claims she’s a “hypocrite” after joining OnlyFans to cash in on her newfound fame, despite being accused of “slut shaming” her MAFS co-star for selling naked photos.

Social media blew up with confused Australians who struggled to understand her step into the racy career after she brutally outed Domenica Calarco for posing nude during their season of Married At First Sight.

The 28-year-old was widely criticised for weaponising Dom’s intimate photo, secretly sending it to other couples on the popular reality show following a heated argument that ended when Dom smashed a glass.

Many condemned Olivia’s apparent revenge, including Channel 9’s relationship experts and influencer Abbie Chatfield who described it as an act of “slut shaming”.

But is there something darker at play here?

Despite the continued backlash Olivia, 28, defended her apparent OnlyFans backflip, telling news.com.au: “I’m not hypocritical.”

“Anything that implied I was slut shaming Dom, was curated by very, very clever producers and editors, because I was very explicitly careful to not slut shame her,” she said.

“No words to this effect ever came out of my mouth, and if it looked like they did, it was taken out of context.

“There was never, ever, any shaming coming from me. This is the most curated, disgusting lie that has come from the show’s edit of me. I would never have anything against sex workers.” But for Dom, the knock on effect of her naked photo being shared has been monumental, sparking mental health issues that are still ongoing today.

“I have severe PTSD which is why every time it’s brought up it triggers me badly,” the make-up artist told news.com.au

“I see a therapist and have since needed valium on top of my anti-depressants that I’ve been on for over 10 years to help me get through the tougher days.

“As much as I know that everyone was on my side, I feel like I was forgotten a little bit in terms of how this affected me and the detriment to my own mental health.

“This is going to follow me forever now, and as much as I have embraced it, having to see how a significant amount of people treated me is just disgraceful.”

The 28-year-old explained in the aftermath of the “naked photo scandal” she copped horrific abuse that affected her “greatly”.

“People were shouting at me from their cars at one point when it was going to air; screaming ‘I’ve seen your ass etc etc’,” she explained.

“People were going up to my dad. It was a lot.

“As much as I am an outgoing and opinionated female, I still have feelings. And my feelings were hurt... a lot. And I’m still healing.”

It’s because of this many were appalled and outraged by Olivia’s apparent double standards when she joined the subscription based site — especially as Olivia hasn’t exactly been quiet about her change of heart.

On her first day of business, Olivia publicly boasted to a tabloid about how much money she made in the first 12 hours on her $14.99-a-month product.

Most recently, her “husband” Jackson Lonie joined the platform too, with Olivia telling her 183,000 followers she was “proud” her partner had joined her in selling explicit content – though his is a smidge cheaper at $9.99-a-month.

Neither appear to be holding back, with public posts on their profiles containing raunchy messages and alluding to paying extra for even “dirtier” content.

It’s a dramatic backflip for Olivia, but is it a surprising one?

Dr Lauren Rosewarne, a lecturer in Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne, says it’s a classic example of the patriarchy at play.

“There are aspects of our society such as patriarchy and capitalism which pit women against each other,” Dr Rosewarne said.

“Women are taught that not only are they in perpetual battle with each other, but also that opportunities for them are in scarce supply and thus they sometimes need to play dirty in order to ‘win’.”

“Humans are a bundle of contradictions and can regularly be hypocrites,” Dr Rosewarne continued.

“We can often quite effortlessly manage to judge behaviour in someone else and yet engage in it ourselves.”

Indeed, following Olivia’s OnlyFans bombshell, many pointed out just how questionable her move was.

“So Olivia from MAFS has made an OnlyFans … after slating Dom for it? Ummm what,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“Olivia from MAFS has OnlyFans – the hypocrisy of it,” another added.

So while Olivia remains firm there was no issue with her actions, you can understand the outrage and the accusations of “double standards”.

But research shows many women are unconsciously “complicit”, often behaving in ways that perpetuate the biased systems around them.

And as another recent study into the impact of patriarchy on women’s behaviour determined, female rivalry only benefits men by “maintaining self-perceived superior status quo”.

“There are compelling examples of the different ways in which women can be complicit in reinforcing their own unfreedom, including by embracing and defending their position as sexual objects,” writes Charlotte Knowles in a paper for academic feminist journal Hypatia.

This is particularly interesting when applied to the way Olivia has behaved.

In a recent Instagram Stories Q&A, Olivia described sharing the nude photo as a “drunk mistake”, which Dom argues shows she “takes no accountability for what it has done to me or how it made me feel”.

But the fact this “slut shaming” conversation continues to spill out into the public domain proves just how insidious the patriarchal ways that have been built into our societal structures are.

“The patriarchy describes the system of male domination. It’s something that touches every aspect of our lives, whether we’re consciously aware of it or not,” Dr Rosewarne explained – even our beloved MAFS.

“The nature of reality television is competitive: even if there’s no prize at the end, the idea of winning over public opinion and being able to parlay fandom into future money-making opportunities means that behaviour on the show needs to be viewed as goal-oriented.

“Shaming someone else can certainly be part of this: you make someone else look bad in the hope of making yourself look good.”

If nothing else, this messy MAFS debacle is proof we’ve pitted women against each other for too long, and it’s about time we stopped.
