The American veteran, 93, arrived at Adelaide airport this morning — he would have travelled further if he had to — to wrap his arms around the woman who broke his heart all those years ago. Accompanied by his son Steve, a weary but clearly happy Mr Thomas was wheeled to a waiting car and helped in to the front seat. “I sure appreciate all the help that we’ve had getting here,” Mr Thomas said. Steve Thomas confirmed his father had endured a long and demanding trip to be in Adelaide to meet Joyce who was an 18-year-old girl in England the last time they met. “It’s been 71-years in the making and it’s been a long trip ... three days ... so we’re hoping everything works out really nice and we’re really looking forward to it,” he said. “Yes I’m sure there will be (tears) ... especially when we leave.” Joyce Morris was a beautiful 16-year-old English girl who fell for a handsome soldier she met by the River Thames in 1944. War tore them apart but they wrote for a while until young Joyce opened a letter from her “Tommy” asking her to join him in the US. He was sure she was the one but she somehow misunderstood his proposal and turned him down. Both went on to marry other people. Mrs Morris moved to Australia with her husband but later divorced him and Mr Thomas had a happy marriage for 56 years until his wife died in 2001. TEN EYEWITNESS NEWS MUST CREDIT
