Aldi permanently slashes prices on hundreds of items

The German supermarket has permanently discounted scores of its products by as much as 30 per cent.

Why the cost of your supermarket shop is set to skyrocket

Aldi has today announced it will permanently slash the price of 10 per cent of its core grocery items.

The hundreds of products now permanently reduced in price include rump steak, nappies, cheese and dishwashing powder, with the new discounts up to 30 per cent off the previous price.

In a statement Aldi Australia managing director Oliver Bongardt said the supermarket began slashing the cost of groceries last year.

“We began reducing the prices of our already price-leading products at the start of the pandemic, and these permanent reductions reaffirm our continued commitment that Aldi will never be beaten on the price of your weekly grocery shop,” he said.

“Aldi has, for the last 20 years, delivered on its price promise to offer shoppers high quality products at low prices.

“We know we save Australian customers more than $2.4 billion every year, when compared to shopping at other supermarkets, and we intend to build on that.”

The move is in response to research conducted by the supermarket which found that nearly one in five of shoppers surveyed – 23.6 per cent – felt they couldn’t afford their normal grocery shop.

The same research found that 42 per cent of respondents felt price was more important compared now to before the pandemic.

The reduced items include Aldi’s Protane shampoo and conditioner which now costs $2.99 a pop down from $3.49 and Moccana Classic Coffee 150g which is now $8.99 down from $9.69.

Some of the biggest savings are in the meat section with Jindurra Station 3 Star Beef Mince that costs $9.99 a kilo saving $1, Jindurra Station Beef Porterhouse which costs $19.99 per kilo down from $22.99 and Jindurra Station Beef Scotch Fillet down from $27.99 to $24.99.

Other groceries included are baking products, cleaning items, bread, juice, cereal and ready-made meals.

Mr Bongardt also said the price reductions did not pass the cost of reductions on their supply partners.

“We are committed to our ongoing relationships with hundreds of Australian businesses – some of which have been with us since the beginning of our Australian operations,” he said.

“ With COVID-19 impacting supply chains, we know the prices of some products have had to increase across the sector, but our mission here is simple – keep the cost of the weekly shop as low as it can be for our customers.”

The permanent price reductions excludes fresh produce and flowers, pet food, trolley tokens and AldiMobile.
