Bella Hadid has made her return to fashion in a futuristic campaign for Heaven by Marc Jacobs’ Fall ’23 line.
The US supermodel, who has taken a lengthy break from the industry due to her “painful” battle with Lyme disease, is unrecognisable in the photos, posing as a bald, “AI-inspired” robot.
The campaign, photographed by Carlijn Jacobs and styled by Danielle Emerson, showcases the new “Kiki Group”, described by the brand in a press release as “an assortment of ready-to-wear and accessories featuring the design codes of the Kiki”.
In one image, Hadid poses nude, wearing a silver ear cuff; in another, she wears armour-like lingerie and a denim miniskirt with platform boots and a pink, off-the-shoulder knit.
The 26-year-old, who has been absent from high-profile events like the Met Gala and Paris Fashion Week, provided an update on her health in early August, thanking those who have supported her through the years.
Hadid was first diagnosed with the bacterial infection in 2012, along with her brother, Anwar, and her mother, Yolanda.
“Living in this state, worsening with time and work while trying to make myself, my family, and the people who support me, proud, had taken a toll on me in ways I can’t really explain,” she wrote in the caption, which accompanied a series of images of the model undergoing treatment.
“To be that sad and sick with the most blessings/privilege/opportunity/love around me was quite possibly the most confusing thing ever.”
Hadid confirmed she had returned to a place of good health.
“If I had to go through all of this again, to get here, to this exact moment I’m in right now, with all of you, finally healthy, I would do it all again,” she said.
“It made me who I am today. The universe works in the most painful and beautiful ways but I need to say that if you are struggling – it will get better. I promise.”
She added that she’d “be back when I’m ready”. “I miss you all so much. I love you all so much.”
It comes after her sister, fellow model Gigi Hadid, shared a throwback photo of the two backstage at a fashion show, writing: “Can’t wait 4 the comebaccckkkkkk.”
Gigi followed it with a clarification the post wasn’t intended “as a promise she’ll be back for shows this next season”, like at New York Fashion Week, which is currently underway.
“Bella just finished a long and intense treatment for Lyme disease,” Gigi wrote.
“I’m so proud of her and excited for her comeback whenever she feels ready.”
