Lara Worthington is leading the Aussie style set at New York Fashion Week, spotted at an exclusive event co-hosted by actor Charlize Theron.

Lara Worthington is leading the Aussie style set at New York Fashion Week, spotted at an exclusive event co-hosted by actor Charlize Theron and luxury timepiece brand Brietling.

The renowned model and entrepreneur was photographed alongside fellow Aussies, including model-turned-photographer Candice Lake, designer Rebecca Vallance, and PR mogul Camille Thioulouse.

The party, held on the eve of NYFW, was held at Pier 76 on the Hudson River, and attended by the likes of Theron, Swedish-Australian model Kelly Gale, ballet dancer Misty Copeland and model Coco Rocha.

Worthington – arguably one of Australia’s most successful fashion exports – wore a strapless black bodice and sunglasses, showing off her recent hair transformation.

The 36-year-old, who resides in New York with her husband, the actor Sam Worthington, and their three sons, spoke about the decision to raise her family in the city in a March cover story for Marie Claire.

“I love the culture of living in New York with the boys. We don’t have a car, so they ride their scooters home from school, which is a nice change from the LA bubble,” she said.

“We often stop at museums or an art gallery on the way home from school, which I love because I didn’t get to experience that when I was growing up.”

Part of the reason the Worthingtons relocated from Los Angeles in 2022 was also thanks to New York’s stricter paparazzi laws – meaning sons Rocket, Racer and River could be better protected.

“We tend to try to keep our lives as normal as we can. I don’t think about that stuff ever. I don’t make it my reality,” Worthington said of the tabloids she’s navigated for more than 20 years.

“My mum instilled in me that it’s important to maintain a little bit of mystery. I think it’s hard in this day and age to achieve. I’ve tried to keep things pretty close to my chest and I think there’s a certain elegance to that.”

Worthington, who is the face of Myer’s Summer 23 campaign – the first time she’s partnered with one of the nation’s major department stores in her career – recently said she’s gone through her fair share of “style transformations and evolutions over the years, but I’m much more empowered and sure of my choices now”.

“Motherhood has provided me with a new lens over my life and really put things into perspective; it’s also given me more confidence in myself,” Worthington said.

“Fashion-wise, I used to experiment a lot more – but with three boys it’s busy. So for day-to-day, I stick to my staple go-to pieces that are functional, easy to wear and can be dressed up or down.

“I add a slight variation each day with accessories, and depending on what I’ve got on for the day will wear a statement heel to meetings or flats running around with the boys.”
