The South Australian man accused of stabbing a former reality star in the back has been delivered a stern warning by a magistrate.

Abdul Kadws Mohammad Amin, 23, has been charged with an aggravated count of causing harm to ex-Bachelorette contestant Paddy Colliar.

The Semaphore resident is accused of stabbing the TV personality, who was working as a topless waiter at a 60th birthday party, in Adelaide on August 8 last year.

At the time of Mr Amin’s arrest, it was alleged he was involved in an altercation with a woman at the party, held at the Pole-4-Fitness pole dancing studio along Beafield Rd in Para Hills West.

SA Police allege Mr Colliar was stabbed with a knife after he tried to intervene.

Paramedics first treated his minor stab wound at the scene before taking him to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

When Mr Amin appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, Magistrate John Wells issued the a wake up call.

The Magistrate told the unrepresented defendant it was “a sensible idea” to get a lawyer because the charges against him were “serious”.

“People found guilty of this charge frequently go to jail,” Mr Wells said.

“I don’t say this to scare you. Well, I do a bit. I'm trying to scare you into getting a lawyer.

“It’s not a trivial matter, so it’s in your best interest.”

The prosecution asked for a 10-week adjournment as it waited for the knife allegedly used in the incident to be examined.

“There’s a number of outstanding statements to be obtained and … some outstanding DNA with respect of a weapon,” she said.

After his initial brief hearing, Mr Amin recalled the matter and asked to have his bail varied for one month so he could visit his sick father in Iraq.

“He’s very sick at the moment,” Mr Amin told the court.

Mr Wells denied the application.

“I’m not saying no forever but it’s not fair to the prosecution to spring this upon them,” he said.

“Speak to (your lawyer) and … when you’re ready you can come back and make an application.”

Mr Amin is due to reappear in court in April.

“Appreciate the messages guys I’m doing OK just lost a fair bit of blood and have broken ribs,” he posted.

In a follow up post once discharged, Mr Colliar said he was still in a lot of pain.

“But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger,” he wrote.
