Anthony Albanese is under fire for attending the extravagant wedding celebration of shock jock Kyle Sandilands, whose best man is a convicted drug smuggler and former brothel operator Simon Main.
Mr Main was jailed in Italy twenty years ago over a massive ecstasy bust involving pills worth $10 million.
Nightclub king John Ibrahim, who describes himself in his own autobiography blurb as “a tough guy, teen delinquent and nightclub king” who partied “like a playboy prince of darkness while staying one step ahead of the cops” is also in the wedding party.
The radio shock jock, who is believed to earn over $5 million a year from his television and radio gigs, told listeners that the wedding cake alone cost nearly $10,000, and another $150,000 had been spent on fresh flowers.
But a slanging match has erupted over the Prime Minister’s plan to attend the lavish event in the last 24 hours with Deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley questioning the decision as unwise.
“Australians will rightly ask whether the Prime Minister should be spinning decks at a million dollar wedding when people can’t afford their rent,” Ms Ley said.
“There is nothing wrong with going to a friend’s wedding, but it is curious that the Prime Minister thinks he can take a day off just days before his first real Budget.
“It can’t be right that the PM is kicking back tomorrow while aged care residents are being kicked out of their homes because of his government’s failures.”
Mr Albanese confirmed he would be in attendance today at a press conference in Brisbane but declined to reveal if he will be DJing the event.
“I’m not in charge of the invite list. I was invited by Kyle Sandilands to his wedding. Which is taking place tomorrow in Sydney. I accepted that invitation. And I intend to attend the wedding,’’ the Prime Minister said.
“Kyle Sandilands is someone who’s a significant figure and one of the things about Kyle Sandilands – I’ll say this – a bloke who at one stage was homeless, living on the streets of Sydney, and has grown into someone who is a significant public figure, is a part of what is an Australian success story.”
Nicknamed “vile Kyle” the radio host have been involved a string of controversies over the decades including asking a 14-year-old girl who was raped if it was ”her only sexual experience”.
The duo later apologised saying: “We feel terrible about the turn of events this morning. Had we known ahead of time, this segment would never have gone to air.
He also suggested actor Magda Szubanski “could be skinny” if she were in a “concentration camp” and attacked a female journalist as “a fat bitter thing ”.
In 2019 he apologised for saying that the Virgin Mary was “chock-a-blocked behind the camel shed”.
“I thought Mary was his girlfriend but apparently it was the mother,” he said on air.
“And the mother lied obviously and told everyone, ‘Nah I got pregnant by a magical ghost’.”
NSW Premier Chris Minns will also attend Saturday’s celebrations.
Mr Albanese appeared on Sandilands’ breakfast radio show last year and promised he would DJ at the wedding.
Earlier this week, the shock jock revealed the Prime Minister will be keeping his mother company at the wedding.
“She’s a fan of yours, so she’s going to lose her mind,” he told him live on air.
