Sorry stick vacuum lovers, but the robot vacuum is now the ‘it’ home appliance.

It can be voice activated, programmed to fit your schedule and sent to clean (and avoid) specific rooms in the house.

Many models are also designed to automatically return to a dock to recharge whenever its battery runs low, while others can empty themselves.

BEST SELF-CLEANING ROBOT VACUUMS

Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni Robot Vacuum Cleaner, $2499 at Amazon Australia

Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni Robot Vacuum Cleaner

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Not only is this Ecovacs robot vacuum attractive with its contemporary and award-winning design, but it also mops and can act as a home security cam with real-time HD streaming – so you can say hello to your pets or simply double check whether you’ve closed the doors.

Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni Robot Vacuum Review

This is probably the best robot vac I’ve ever tested. It’s fantastic picking up dog hair, crumbs and even some bits of vegetable skins that have dried into the floor. I’m surprised by how noticeably clean the tiles and hardwood floors look after just a vacuum. The mopping and self-cleaning function are also just as impressive. (And it’s not often robot cleaners master both vacuuming and mopping.)

But the price tag is definitely eye watering. And given the cost, it’s a little disappointing that the mops needs to be manually attached and removed (unlike the iRobot Roomba Combo j7+).

iRobot Roomba Combo j7+ Robot Vacuum and Mop

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

This iRobot Roomba might be one of the most (actual) hands-free robot cleaners on the market. It automatically retracts the mopping pad back to the top of the unit whenever it’s not in mopping mode and, if our testing is anything to go by, rarely gets tangled (except on long pile rugs).

iRobot Roomba Combo j7+ Robot Vacuum and Mop Review

This new iRobot robot cleaner is super easy to use and does a decent job at picking dust, dirt and dog hair. The fact it can detect pet waste, as well as switch from vacuuming to mopping without having to complete two separate jobs, makes it more convenient and hassle-free compared to other models on the market. The accompanying app is also a winner, offering plenty of customisation and opportunities to input feedback for a more effective clean.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

This top-rated robot vacuum is a great option for those on a budget. It measures 7.6cm tall and 27.9cm wide, and offers four cleaning modes – whole-area (arranged) which is suitable for hard floors and will return to the charging stand when done, whole-area (random) which is ideal for short-pile carpets, along-edge which is used to clean the edge of the walls and spot-focus which is suitable for targeting cleaning of small areas. Not to mention, you can control this little device from anywhere with the app.

“I was on the fence like most people when it comes to robot vacuums but bought this unit on a whim. It has certainly not disappointed … It is quiet and effective, mappable via an app but even without using the app you get an excellent clean of all accessible areas. It’s amazing what this little unit picks up-even if your floors and rugs don’t look dirty or in need of a vacuum … I can’t imagine life without it now!” one shopper wrote.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

This robot vacuum measures just 7.24cm thin but still packs an 0.6 litre dustbin (which is more than what most chunkier models offer).

As a downside, some reviewers point out it isn’t the best at detecting furniture and you will need to pick up any cords, hair ties and other items you don’t want accidentally swept up.

“The cleaning power is amazing and the side brushes are like little claws pulling all the debris into its mouth like a crab on the bottom of the sea floor. I love it a lot, so I can forgive it for bashing the furniture that it doesn’t see,” a person commented.

“The product was easy to set up and has good suction, even on the lowest setting,” a happy reviewer posted.

“This is a fantastic robot! While it lacks Wi-Fi connectivity or an app to download, it doesn’t need one. The result is a device that gives users arguably the greatest bang for the buck of any robot vac on the market,” another commented.

If you have a shaggy rug or thick carpet, this model is worth checking out since it’s designed to clean medium-pile carpet – rather than low-pile, like most other robot vacuums on the market.

After trying out the robot vacuum herself, checkout Consumer Technology Writer Lauren Chaplin is certainly impressed: “As someone who hates vacuuming, the iRobot Roomba J7+ has been a dream to have around. The front-facing camera makes the vacuum’s navigation system better than most, allowing it to cruise around and dodge hazards such as cables with ease.”

She adds: “The suction power admittedly isn’t as powerful as some other models (like the iRobot Roomba S9+), but it hasn’t stopped the vacuum from doing what I need it to. Overall it’s an impressive model that’s ideal for busy households and daily spot cleans.”

“I’m obsessed with this! I have five teens and two German Shepherds so it’s a godsend,” commented a happy customer.

“The best purchase we’ve made in a long time! The vacuum component works really well, gets in all the edges and floors are spotless!” another posted.

“Doesn’t like some of the skinnier power cords but very easy to put those up out of the way. We have a (Golden Retriever) so the hair is a lot but we run the vac daily, sometimes twice.”

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU PAY FOR A ROBOT VACUUM?

Robot vacuum cleaners typically cost between $700 and $1900, but how much you’ll need to spend depends on the different features and suction power you need for your home.

Self-emptying models, which usually allow you to conveniently put off emptying the dust bag to once a month, are usually more expensive – regardless of whether the base is included or sold separately.

Fortunately, most models come with the same features, including mapping technology, ledge detection, anti-collision sensors and the ability to schedule cleans.

While the saying, ‘you get what you pay for’ usually applies to appliances, these reviews prove there’s a robot vacuum to satisfy all budgets.

Plus, there are plenty of discounts to score on Amazon. So, it’s a win-win!

ARE ROBOT VACUUMS GOOD?

With many Aussies owning more than one type of vacuum, it’s definitely worth considering getting a robot vacuum for small jobs or daily housekeeping and reserving your stick or barrel vacuum for deeper cleans. They’re undeniably convenient, especially with more models now self charging and boasting both vacuuming and mopping functions.

If you’re shopping for a pet cam, there are even units with a built-in camera that can show real-time footage of what’s going on at home.
