Hard floors may be beautiful, but the constant mopping they require has to be one of the most thankless chores imaginable.

The sparkling finish you work so hard to achieve seems to fade almost instantly as spills; stains and general debris instantly accumulate again; and nobody has the time to whip out the mop every day of the week to keep up the cleanliness.

That’s why robotic mops are a godsend to those of us with timber, tiles and other hard surfaces throughout our homes. Plus, the fact that you can run them as frequently as you like without having to lift a finger means you can keep those floors sparkling day in and day out with ease.

Godfreys’ Head of Product, Ivana Liistro, spilled the beans on how these clever cleaners work and what makes them worth buying.

“The mopping function uses vibrating or oscillating technology to clean your floor, as the robot moves around your home. Depending on the model, some robots can vacuum and mop simultaneously and also detect the surface they are on and will lift the mop pads up automatically as it transitions from hard floors to carpet,” she explained to news.com.au.

Check out her tips below, along with some of the top-rated products on the market right now – inlcuding the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra robot vacuum and mop cleaner, which automatically washes its mop pads after every use and re-fills the water tank so you don’t need to pause mid-clean.

Ecovacs DEEBOT T9+ Robotic Vacuum and Mop Review, Dani Maher

“As a lazy cleaner, I’ve found the DEEBOT T9+ to be a godsend. It does an excellent job of collecting dust and debris from around my apartment, cleverly avoiding furniture and the perilous staircase that leads to my front door. I was particularly impressed by the mop, which really scrubs my timber floors and tiled bathroom until they shine, while avoiding rugs and the carpeted bedrooms. It doesn’t over-saturate the mop either, so your floors aren’t left dripping wet. I can easily set it off with a simple “Hey Google, start vacuuming” thanks to its smart speaker compatibility. Its most convenient feature is the auto-emptying functionality, which sees the robot empty debris from the dust tank directly into a large bin attached to the charging station, so you don’t have to expose yourself to allergens (a saviour for hayfever sufferers like me).”

HOW DOES A ROBOT MOP WORK?

Robot mops and vacuums use sensors and varying mapping technologies to create a floorplan of your home, usually detecting carpeted and hard floors, and then design an intelligent cleaning route. Detailed instructions vary depending on the model you buy, but the general way to use them is to fill the water tank, attach a mopping pad, and set it off to mop around your home so you barely have to lift a finger, saving you plenty of time.

Keep in mind that while robot mops leave your floors clean, Ivana says the appliance doesn’t actually sanitise the surface. Instead, it cleans the surface by getting rid of any spills or stains and giving your flooring a bit of a refresh.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A ROBOT MOP

Ivana says there are several factors you need to think about and double check before rushing out to buy a robotic mop. These include:

• Type of surface

• Runtime

• Noise level

• Suction power

• Dustbin and water tank capacites (if you have a robot vacuum and mop)

• Ease of emptying

• Extra accessories, such as an auto-emptying or auto-cleaning station

• Smart app features, including scheduling, multi-floor mapping and obstacle avoidance

• Compatibility with smartphone and smart assistants (e.g. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant).

CAN YOU PUT VINEGAR OR ANY TYPE OF SOLUTION IN A ROBOT MOP?

Unless you don’t mind voiding your warranty, then it’s best to stay clear from vinegar and other homemade cleaning solutions.

“Most robot vacuums with mopping function use only water or recommended brand specific cleaning solution. We would not recommend adding anything to your machine that is not recommended by the brand,” Ivana said.

CAN I USE A ROBOT MOP ON LAMINATE FLOORS?

Always double check the instructions on your robot’s manual, but generally, yes, you can use a robot mop on laminate floors, as well as most other hard surfaces including tile, stone, concrete, vinyl, and hardwood.

Not set on the robot revolution? Not to worry, you can check out our roundup of the best steam mops here, or keep your floors clean with our guide to the best stick vacuums and best handheld vacuums.

IS IT BETTER TO GET A ROBOT MOP OR A HYBRID ROBOT VACUUM AND MOP?

It’s probably more cost-effective and easier to opt for a robot mop and vacuum combo because most robot mops worth buying now already contain a vacuuming function.

“A robot vacuum with mopping function built in would give the best of both worlds. It all comes down to the individual needs of the customer and what they require from their cleaning solution. However, being able to have a robot with both means you can schedule the cleaning together or simply turn one function off if not required,” Ivana said.

ARE ROBOT MOPS ANY GOOD?

Robot mops are incredibly effective at helping you clean your hard floors with far less effort. This is especially the case where certain models – like the DEEBOT T9+ and iRobot Braava jet m6 – feature rotating or oscillating mop pads that use a scrubbing motion instead of wiping a wet pad across the floor. These models are generally seen as the most effective when it comes to eliminating stains, stubborn debris or sticky spills.
