Vacuuming alone can't eliminate all the germs lurking in your home, which is why first-time steam mop users are surprised to discover how much dirt is actually sitting on their floors.

After all, steam cleaning is great for getting rid of bacteria that usually need high temperatures to be eliminated effectively, according to Daniel Grossi, National Sales Manager at Euroflex Australia. He also says they're a "real time saver" and the perfect way to refresh floors with minimal effort.

It's no wonder thousands of shoppers are praising the popular Shark Scrub and Steam mop, especially after seeing how quickly it removed a heavily dried-on stain that I'd given up on ages ago. The appliance leaves the surface looking and feeling noticeably cleaner, and works just as efficiently on wooden floors as it does on tiles.

The main downside is that the rounded edges on the mop head make it difficult to reach into tight spaces and corners.

But overall, it's unbelievably easy to manoeuvre and includes a handy extra pair of mop pads for when you forget to wash the other set or just need a refresh mid-clean.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A STEAM MOP

When choosing steam mops to include in our list, we evaluated several factors:

Budget

You can find steam mops ranging from $145 to $1499.

Type of floor/surface

Steam mops are suitable for most hard floors, except unsealed surfaces such as laminate. However, some options come with accessories specifically designed for steam cleaning carpet, rugs, windows, benchtops and other areas in the home.

Water tank capacity

A larger water tank is better for bigger homes or if you're typically cleaning for extended periods, although something closer to a 2L reservoir should be fine for most households.

Weight

Steam cleaners usually weigh between 2kg and 4kg. Heavy-duty models tend to be bulkier, while a basic steam mop is more likely to be lighter and more portable.

Cord length

Generally, a longer power cord is better since it means less plugging and unplugging while cleaning.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

To help you find the best option for your needs and budget, we asked Daniel Grossi, National Sales Manager at Euroflex Australia, for his expert advice and recommendations on what to look for when buying a steam mop. In addition, our shopping team read hundreds of customer reviews and looked at test results and ratings from product review sites to find the best steam mop for you, from premium to budget offerings.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT SURFACES CAN YOU STEAM MOP?

Steam mops are typically suitable for most types of hard floors, including sealed surfaces such as tiles, stone, hardwood and marble. Although you should always double-check the manufacturer's instructions to avoid any accidents.

On the other hand, unsealed surfaces and laminates are likely to be damaged.

Also, you generally can't use a steam mop to clean carpet and rugs, unless it comes with attachments specifically designed to tackle those types of surfaces. If you do plan on using these accessories, it's definitely worth reading customer reviews to see how well the floors hold up over time.

“Some steam mops promote that they can kill dust mites in carpets, but the temperature of the steam is usually not hot enough,” Grossi warned.

IS STEAMING BETTER THAN MOPPING?

While using a traditional mop and bucket can be an effective way to refresh your floors, a steam mop can help save time and effort (especially if you're working with large spaces).

Grossi points out that, unlike other types of cleaning tools, steam mops use high temperatures to eliminate germs and bacteria that typically require a substantial amount of heat to be killed effectively.

Plus, many steam mops can sanitise surfaces without chemicals and often don't need a bucket-full of water for every clean.

When it comes to tackling spills, stick with the regular mop. Steam mops are usually designed for deep cleans rather than washing floors daily.

CAN A STEAM MOP LEAVE STREAKS OR RESIDUE ON THE FLOOR?

If you have been mopping your floors with detergent, Grossi says chemical streaks may continue to appear for some time after using a steam mop on the same surface for the first time.

“This is due to the chemical residues that have hardened on the floor from previous mopping, which are released when a steam mop is used," they explained.

But don't worry - the marks will eventually go away after multiple uses of a steam mop. Just make sure the appliance isn't leaving too much water, otherwise you'll end up with marks if the surface isn't manually dried.
