The Dyson Wash G1 might be the most oddly satisfying thing I’ve ever hands-on tested.

I didn’t expect the great delight I’d take in watching that little ‘dirty water’ barrel fill up slowly with brown, murky water.

For those whose For You Pages are filled with simple videos of someone mowing the lawn, restacking the fridge or making the bed with fresh sheets, you’ll understand. It’s the 2020s version of a makeover montage from your favourite 90s movie – real results within seconds.

I’d be transparent with you here, I’m not the savviest when it comes to appliances and so the idea of putting together a wet and dry vacuum, getting the settings right and then actually using it correctly was a tad overwhelming.

But using the Dyson Wash G1 couldn’t have been easier. From opening the box and only needing to put two pieces together to get it going, to placing it on a charging dock to self-clean, this is one of the most intuitive – and easiest to use – appliances I’ve ever come across.

Given it retails for $999, this isn’t an impulse purchase. But it is worth every cent. here’s what you need to know before buying the Dyson Wash G1 to make sure it’s the right choice for you.

FEATURES

Having had little experience with wet and dry vacs before, the Dyson Wash G1 has opened my eyes to a whole new level of cleaning. Here’s a breakdown on its general tech specs:

  • Runtime: It can cover up to 290 sqm coverage with 1L of clean water and takes as little as 140 seconds to self-clean the entire system.
  • Two highly absorbent microfibre rollers with 64,800 filaments per cm
  • Debris tray with a 500-micron mesh to separate dirty water from large debris
  • 0.8 litre Dirty water tank
  • Up to 35 mins run time
  • Height: 1140mm
  • Length: 225mm
  • Width: 300mm
  • Weight: 4.9kg (when empty)
  • Three modes of cleaning: Level 1 (Light cleaning and small spills), Level 2 (Debris, hair and moderate stains) and Level 3 (Tough, dried-on stains and messy spills) plus a MAX setting (stubborn stains)
  • What’s in the box: Apart from the actual vacuum itself, the charging dock (doubles as a station for the Dyson Wash G1 to self-clean) and a charging cord

This is a very sleek product. From the dark blue of the handle and rollers, to the classic black of the tank holders, this tool follows the quintessential Dyson design – simple, smooth and elegant.

Both the 1L clean water tank and a 0.8 litre dirty tank are transparent, which allows the user to physically see when to top up the water and also provides visual satisfaction – seeing the clear water turn brown during the cleaning process is a thrill, believe me.

At the very top of the handle you’ll find a small but very clear LCD screen, a power button and a ‘MAX’ cleaning option.

The charging dock is also sleek – sitting only as wide as the actual vacuum itself, I was able to easily tuck mine under my kitchen island when not in use.

SET UP

Having tried market competitors, I can safely say the Dyson Wash G1 is one of the easiest wet and dry vacs to put together.

The tool itself comes in two parts – the rollers/water tanks and the stick handle (perfect for novices like me who never read instruction manuals and always, always ask for help).

Once you set up the charging dock (again, comes in just two parts plus the charging cord), all you have to do is download the Dyson app and register your appliance. You can still use the appliance without registering but it’s a good idea to sign up as it gives you access to video guides, 24/7 support and reminders for when you need to replace your rollers.

Next you just fill the clean water tank (blue side) and voila, you’re ready to go!

HOW WELL DOES THE DYSON WASH G1 CLEAN?

The Dyson Wash G1 works a little differently to a regular vacuum in that it doesn’t rely on suction. Rather, it uses two counter-rotating microfibre rollers that are engineered to pick up all the dirt and grime from your floor.

As a klutz, I’m self-aware enough to know that I need cleaning tools that are going to work overtime. Between the pasta splatters that didn’t quite make the commute from my fork to my mouth, or the droplets of smoothie that hit the ground before making it out of the kitchen – my cleaning tools need to be powerful, durable and fast acting.

That brings me to the Dyson Wash G1 testing phase. I made sure to use substances that would require a little more grit than say your everyday milks or generic biscuit crumbs.

With two full tablespoons of Greek yoghurt on the ground, I thought the Dyson Wash G1 would need at least two to three passes to completely clear the density of the product. However, it took just one swipe for the muck to be completely gone. Better still, I got to see the dirty water tank immediately fill with a small amount of milky liquid – something I didn’t expect to feel so weirdly satisfying.

I tested the Dyson Wash on picking up a raw egg – apparently egg whites can strip wooden floor boards – with one pass it picked up the whole thing. Picture: news.com.au/Claudia Coy

Next up was the egg test, I whisked a whole egg and placed it on my living room floor. I’d been told egg whites can potentially strip wooden floor boards so there was a lot riding on this specific phase of the test. Again, with one quick pass the Dyson Wash G1 picked up the entire contents and left my floors sparkling clean. (I ran a paper towel over the area to ensure my floor boards were in fact safe and can confirm, there was nothing left behind).

My final test was seeing how the Dyson Wash G1 would go with a combination of dirty liquid and debris. The tool promises to separate both into two different compartments – the debris in the tray above the rollers and the liquid in the dirty water tank. And what better ingredients to use than sticky maple syrup and large chunks of rice crackers to really put it to the test?

This gunky pile of sticky, crunchy food debris was no match for the Dyson Wash. Picture: news.com.au/Claudia Coy

Making the mess was half the fun, the other half was seeing the Dyson Wash G1 clean the whole pile of gunk up in just one pass. True to its word, the tool separated the crackers into the tray and watered down the maple syrup into the dirty tank.

It's a serious sucker. Picture: news.com.au/Claudia Coy

Given this engineered separation, the Dyson Wash G1 is incredibly easy – and more importantly hygienic – to clean. You simply empty the dirty tray into your garbage and pour the dirty water tank down your bathroom sink.

HOW MUCH DOES THE DYSON WASH G1 COST?

Retailing for $999, the Dyson Wash G1 is currently available from Dyson.

VERDICT: IS THE DYSON WASH WORTH BUYING

The Dyson Wash G1 is a worth-it investment with hard-to-beat features that justify the extra splurge. Picture: news.com.au/Claudia Coy

The Dyson Airwrap is one of my favourite purchases of 2023 and now that I have it, I can’t imagine life without it. But for some reason I found it easier to justify spending $749 on a hair tool rather than $999 on a wet & dry vac … until I actually had a chance to try this one out.

While it is undeniably pricey, the Dyson Wash G1 should be viewed as an investment. It both mops and vacuums, it’s powerful and efficient and – bonus – it vows it won’t produce any unpleasant odour, which can often occur over time with traditional vacs that use suction.

In my opinion, the Dyson Wash G1 is well worth it, the features of this wet and dry vac justify the splurge. It’s easy to manoeuvre, it’s great on tough stains, it separates debris from dirty water and it self-cleans.

It also comes with a two-year warranty, for a little extra peace of mind.
