Sometimes the only thing between you and a good sleep is a constant tosser, but going to bed angry from “frequent, high-intensity conflict” might actually be causing more trouble than you think.

It can also be a sign of bigger issues in the relationship, according to Emma Merritt, Senior Sleep Science Manager and a Learning and Development Expert from Emma Sleep.

“Poor sleep quality can negatively impact a relationship, and vice versa … Sleep plays an essential role in bolstering our emotional regulation, stress management, and ability to look on the bright side of things – all essential capabilities for a strong partnership,” she tells news.com.au checkout.

Having different sleep schedules and routines can also contribute to a sleepless slumber, along with environmental factors such as lighting, temperature, bedding and a mattress that’s incompatible with you and your partner’s needs.

And for couples finding themselves at their wit’s end, Emma says the ‘sleep divorce’ trend shouldn’t be underestimated.

“Sleep divorce has nothing to do with a breakdown of the relationship – in fact, it can be a critical step towards saving your relationship,” the expert explains.

“When both parties are consistently well-rested, couples may experience less conflict overall or find that they come to a resolution more quickly than when one or both of them is sleep-deprived.

“On the other hand, couples who sleep in separate rooms may need to make a bit more effort when it comes to physical intimacy, since they miss out on the act of falling asleep together each night. Setting aside a time and place to get cozy together (...or whatever else you might want to do) can help!”

But for households that would rather use the extra room as a home office or ensuite bathroom, Emma suggests investing in a mattress with isolation motion technology to “reduce how much your partner’s tossing and turning disturbs you”. She also recommends using separate sheets and duvets to give each of you “full control of your bedding microclimate”.

We’ve also listed a variety of mattress options below for some inspiration. One of our top picks includes the “very comfortable” Sleep Republic High Definition Pocket Spring Mattress, which one shopper says is so durable it still looks and feels the same since they bought it seven years ago.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A MATTRESS FOR COUPLES

Mattress size

In Australia, these are the standard mattress sizes.

Super King size mattress for couples

Super King mattresses are usually 203cm x 203cm.

King size mattress for couples

King mattresses are usually 183.5cm x 203cm.

Queen size mattress for couples

Queen mattresses are usually 152.5cm x 203cm.

Double size mattress for couples

Double mattresses are usually 138.5cm x 190cm.

Mattress type

There are a wide range of mattresses to choose from, including memory foam mattresses, all foam mattresses, innerspring mattresses, pocket spring mattresses and hybrid mattresses.

Firmness

Firmness level can make a huge impact on comfort and support, and even the longevity of your mattress. There are a variety of factors to consider, including:

Sleeping position

• Stomach sleepers: Medium firm are generally great for stomach sleepers. This type of sleeping position demands a mattress that’s firmer around the hips to prevent your midsection from sinking, which can result in your back from getting out of alignment.

• Side sleepers: Side sleepers need a softer mattress that cushions the arm, but still provides enough firmness around the hip area

• Back sleepers: People who sleep on their back should look for medium firm or firm mattress that distribute your weight evenly and keep the spine straight.

Body type

People with a heavier or larger body type should look for medium or medium firm mattresses since these offer better pressure relief, particularly around the hips and shoulders. Although stomach sleepers will need to level up to a firm or extra firm mattress to avoid sagging in the middle section of the mattress, which is where most the body weight usually sits.

On the other hand, those with a lighter or smaller frame might be more comfortable with a soft or medium mattress. Lightweight stomach sleepers may also need to bump up the firmness to either a medium or firm mattress to get that added help with spinal alignment.

Mattress thickness

Mattress thickness works a little like mattress firmness and picking the right one can similarly depend on aspects like weight and sleeping position, as well as mobility issues and general bed height preferences.

• Standard: Most mattresses range between 25cm and 30cm, and this is usually food for back sleepers.

• Thick: Thick mattresses (30cm to 35cm thick) are great for people who want more cushioning for extra help with joint pain and pressure relief.

• Extra thick: Extra deep mattresses (more than 35cm thick) are ideal for people who want a mattress which really cradles the shape of your body, and those with a larger body type. These usually feel soft but still have enough push back so you don’t end up sinking into the mattress.

Mattress support weight

To make the most out of a mattress and extend its lifespan for as long as possible, it’s worth taking into account the suggested weight limit a mattress can support.

Don’t worry, exceeding the limit won’t immediately break the bed. But the natural process of wear and tear will occur faster, which can mean experiencing the downsides of an old worn out mattress sooner. This includes sagging, poor support, less comfort while sleeping (and the usual aches and pains that come with these issues).

Edge support

Having great edge support keeps you secure and prevent the feeling you’ll roll straight off the bed. It can also help discourage you from getting into uncomfortable positions, and potentially reduce any soreness around your hips from twisting and turning during the night.

Solid edge support can also make a difference towards maintaining the shape of the mattress over time, and expand the overall sleep surface so you’re not forced to squish up to your partner to avoid sliding off.

Top types — pillow top, tight top, Euro top and smooth top

Some sleeping positions are a better match with certain mattress tops.

• Euro top mattress: euro top mattresses have extra padding that’s sewn to the edges of the mattress.

• Pillow top mattress: pillow top mattresses are similar to euro top mattresses, but feels softer and with a much clear indentation to show where the padding from the top is compared to the mattress.

• Tight top mattress: For those who want a flat and firm surface, tight top mattresses don’t have the same cushioning and pillow top and euro top mattresses. Instead, there’s just a layer of fabric sewn to the side.

• Smooth top mattress: Smooth top mattresses similarly don’t have the thick layer of padding, and alternatively have a layer of fabric on top of the mattress. Unlike tight top mattresses, this type of top doesn’t have a super visible seam compared.

Smell

Many mattresses, typically bed-in-a-box options, have an odd or ‘chemical-like’ smell once you take it out from the packaging. This is called ‘off-gassing’ and tends to last for a few days, often appearing in mattresses (and other types of products) that have been vacuum sealed immediately after the manufacturing process. The smell doesn’t necessarily mean the mattress contains harmful chemicals. Boxed mattresses, for example, are very tightly wrapped in packaging soon after it’s finished production so there may still be some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the manufacturing process that haven’t had a chance to make their way out. That’s why it’s a good idea to give your new mattress at least 24 hours to air out and fully expand before using it.

To avoid off-gassing, you can opt for an ‘organic’ mattress made with non-toxic and natural materials like natural latex (such as Dunlop latex or Talalay), cotton and wool. In Australia, you’re most likely see a product as OEKO-TEX or Global Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) certified.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS FOAM OR SPRING MATTRESS BETTER FOR COUPLES?

Spring mattresses are generally firmer and offer better support for heavier couples, and generally a good pick for hot sleepers since it allows for plenty of airflow. But these don’t always isolate motion as well compared to foam mattresses, and may get noisy.

Foam mattresses are worth considering if minimising partner disturbance is high your wishlist, along with a softer a mattress that still provides sturdy support and good pressure relief. A foam mattress is also usually seen as kinder on side sleepers since it contains more cushioning and cradles the contours of the body more. The downside is some foam mattresses trap body heat, which isn’t ideal for hot sleepers.

WHAT IS THE BEST MATTRESS FOR SOMEONE WHO MOVE TOSSES AND TURNS?

If your partner’s driving you flipping mad from constant turning, look for a mattress with good motion isolation so their movements don’t transfer to your side of the bed. Foam mattresses tend to have decent motion isolation,

While foam mattresses usually offer decent motion isolation, you can opt for a pocket spring mattress (rather than an innerspring mattress) as an alternative to an all foam mattress. The coils work independently, so there’s less chances of motion transfer because everything is less interconnected.

Keep in mind tossers are different to combination sleepers, who instead make a nice pair with hybrid mattresses since these usually tailor to most sleeping positions.
