Masturbation has definitely come out of the closet in the past few years.
Once considered a major taboo, using sex toys for self-pleasure is starting to be recognised as an important act of self care but the same cannot be said for everyone.
Lovehoney’s 2022 Global Survey found that while almost half of respondents used sex toys during masturbation the numbers dropped significantly for those in relationships.
“There remains that stigma around the use of toys for both male-identifying people and in partnered sex, with only 22 per cent using sex toys for solo play with many thinking it’s for people who have sexual problems, it’s a replacement for your partner or they ruin your sex life,” Lovehoney Ambassador and psycho-sexologist Chantelle Otten told news.com.au.
But in reality sex toys can be a “great addition to your sexual play”, she added.
“The introduction of toys allows you to mix up the way that you receive pleasure and expand your sexual menu when it comes to solo or partner play,” Chantelle said.
“If you try it and don’t like it? Don’t use it again.”
We currently recommend the popular We-Vibe Chorus — this couple’s vibrator is perfect for you and your partner to indulge in, especially if you are in a long-distance relationship.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SEX TOY
When it comes to buying a sex toy, you should consider these factors before making the purchase.
Type: There are a variety of sex toys out in the market so you should decide whether you’re after a sex toy that’s great for internal and external play or solo and shared play.
Target area: Not all sex toys will be suitable for certain areas, so make sure you know if you’re after a toy that is for your clitoral area, anal area or G-spot. You can always check the product descriptions for information on where you can use the toy.
Material: Body-safe materials that are long-lasting, easy to clean and water resistant like medical grade silicone are generally the best choice.
Experience level: If you’re a beginner, toys like rabbit and bullet vibrators are great starting options and if you’re an experienced user, clitorial suction toys, G-spot exploration and anal play would be great to branch out to.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW TO INTRODUCE SEX TOYS INTO YOUR RELATIONSHIP
Introducing sex toys into the bedroom can seem “daunting at first”, but it’s important to have good communication with your partner so you’re able to convey “your desires and what you would like in the bedroom,” Chantelle said.
“Start by floating the idea past your partner and opening lines of communication in a non-confronting way,” she said.
“Try something like ‘I’ve always wanted to try xxxx with you’ or ‘I’ve heard xxxx vibrator is great for couples. Why don’t we give it a try?’.”
Viv suggests bringing it up in conversation casually, saying: “The best way to bring up sex toys in a relationship, especially if you aren’t sure what the response might be, is to ‘blame it’ on, or attribute it to something else.
“For example you might like to say, ‘I heard about this new sex toy on a podcast yesterday, would you be into trying something like that?’”
When picking out your first sex toy, Chantelle recommends browsing a website together so it’s “a fun activity where you can learn more about each other and your desires” as well as reading reviews and advice guides.
Viv Conway, co-founder of Girls Get Off, told news.com.au the female-focused sex toy brand was seeing “more and more of our audience introduce toys into the bedroom”.
“Previously where sex toys might have been perceived as an enemy or a ‘replacement’, people are realising that this is not the case,” she said.
“It’s better viewed that sex is like ice cream – already great and delicious, but toys can be added as fun toppings to bring something different to the experience.”
BEST WAYS FOR COUPLES TO USE SEX TOYS
Viv recommends couples spend 20 minutes in “foreplay mode” with no penetration but plenty of touching, kissing and a toy of your choice.
“This can be a good time to use anything with a vibrating function (like Tiff) all over the body and erogenous areas to level up the pleasure,” she said.
“If you do decide to move to penetrative sex then toys like the Missy are perfect for clit stim and vibrations that will be felt by a partner.”
Chantelle says couples can use toys to simulate their favourite pleasure areas “even further”, as well as using them to “explore areas that previously haven’t been stimulated”.
“Another fun way for couples to use toys is for edging – when your partner is on the brink of orgasm, decrease the level of stimulation and tease them, focusing on erogenous zones around the genitals and elsewhere to continue stimulation without tipping your partner over the edge,” she said.
“One of the most important things to remember when using sex toys is lube.
“Always add lube – I suggest a water-based lube as these can be used with any toy – to enhance pleasure and make sex more comfortable.”
