WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING BRIDAL LINGERIE
To understand what brides-to-be should look for in their wedding day or night lingerie, we spoke to Miranda Aston, the Founder, Creative Director and Head Designer of ASTON Bridal. Aston was a lingerie designer before she moved into wedding gowns and lingerie following her own fairytale ‘I do’.
First of all, she points out that there can be two types of bridal lingerie. One which you wear underneath your wedding dress during the day, and another that you wear later on when you get out of your wedding dress.
Style: “Ultimately, it depends on your wedding dress,” Aston says, “because you need to consider what is going to be visible under your wedding dress – that’s probably the primary priority, I would say, 100 per cent. For example, if you have a low back wedding dress, you definitely don’t want to wear anything that’s like Spanx, that is high rise, because it will, of course, show at the top of your beautiful low back.”
Fit: “You need to be really considerate of the lines of your dress as well,” explains Aston. “So if you’re wearing a really tight fitted dress, you might want to look at something that is quite seamless or maybe something that has a little bit of compression. But if you’re wearing something that is like A-line and like Mikado, for example, so it’s not see through at all, you could get away with wearing cute little lacy lingerie that you probably would want to wear later in the night anyway.”
Colour: “If you’re wearing anything that’s like a semi-sheer dress, you want to be conscious that you will really need to wear nude underwear, and the nude needs to match your skin tone exactly for it to be the most invisible,” Aston says. “So we have dresses that are sheer and you may think that your underwear is nude, but if it has even the slightest tinge of grey or yellow, or if it’s a tiny bit light or a tiny bit dark, you can really see it and it makes a sheer dress appear so much more sheer. Whereas if it matches your skin tone exactly, then it will just melt in, and the dress will really shine and you won’t have that kind of sheerness really highlighted.”

WHAT ARE THE BEST STYLES OF BRIDAL LINGERIE?
“Again, this is really going to depend on what your dress needs,” says the wedding lingerie designer.
“So, if your dress needs something that has a little bit of compression, you might be looking towards brands like SKIMS or some sort of Spanx situation.
“Or if you’re wearing a tight fitted dress, but you don’t need something with compression, look for something that is quite seamless for the best style of bridal lingerie.
“And then if you have the ultimate flexibility, then go nuts and pick something that really speaks to you stylistically.”
WHAT COLOUR LINGERIE IS BEST TO WEAR ON YOUR WEDDING NIGHT?
“Depending on your dress, you might have to wear nude and then change into something else later,” explains Aston.
“But you could also do a cute little blue lacy moment underneath, especially if you’re not going see your underwear through your dress. A cute little blue lacy moment could be your secret ‘something blue’, or you could do red, if that’s really your colour.
“I’m a big believer in personal preference – whatever makes you feel the absolute best. But the go-to would, for sure, be a beautiful ivory or white, and likely something with lace.
“Then later in the night, you could go for something that is really sexy in bright white or ivory, because that’s the epitome of bridal. Something with a little bit of lace is also always fun, as well as something with a gorgeous delicate embroidery. Or anything personalised, like ‘Mrs Upton’ – that is probably what I would be looking for if I was a current bride.”
DO YOU HAVE TO WEAR BRIDAL LINGERIE UNDER YOUR DRESS?
“Absolutely not,” the designer says. “You don’t have to wear it under your dress at all, and to be honest, I think that a lot of brides actually go with nothing under their dress. I think it would be a higher percentage than one would think.”
HOW SHOULD YOU CARE FOR YOUR BRIDAL LINGERIE?
“I’m an absolute stickler for reading the care instructions,” Aston says. “So depending on the fibre content and the fabric, if it’s a silk, you might find it’s like a gentle hand wash on cold and lay flat in shade to dry sort of situation.
“Or you might find if it’s something quite high end and very special, it might be a dry clean only situation. Everything will vary, piece to piece, depending on the exact fabric, so definitely raid your care instructions. That is my biggest tip to anyone who is wanting to invest in beautiful, quality pieces and see them last in their wardrobe – read those care instructions.”
