Looking good often leads us to feeling good, a bit like how a great shirt or pair of boots can put a little spring in your step.
Through this lens, having a wardrobe stocked with comfortable, versatile and stylish pieces will ensure you’re covered for every occasion, and this is where a great essentials wardrobe will really do some heavy lifting.
Similar to a capsule wardrobe, which lets you rotate several key pieces to form a range of different outfits, an essentials wardrobe is a collection of shirts, pants, shoes and accessories that creates a great foundation for you to build out a look all-year around.
Not sure where to start? Nicole Adolphe, Head of Style at THE ICONIC recommends picking around eight to 10 pieces, to build a strong foundation.
“This would include a good pair of denim jeans, white sneakers, leather boots, a good quality linen shirt, an everyday T-shirt, a crisp, button down shirt and chinos, that can be dressed up or down,” she told news.com.au checkout.
“A good leather belt. some basic accessories, like rings, a watch, and chain in your preferred metal, plus a navy suit and a knit polo top.”
Our top picks to make the perfect essentials outfit include the Julius Marlow Men’s Kick Chelsea Boots, a near perfect dupe for R.M. Williams. Currently on sale for $132.56 (down from $189.95), a steal when you consider R.M Williams will set you back $649. Shoppers say the “good quality” boots that are “comfortable, great fit, and look great”.
We also love these Calvin Klein Slim Jeans and this super luxe button up shirt from Runaway the Label.
Keep reading for my round up of the best options that will get you well on your way to creating a successful capsule wardrobe.
OUR TOP PICKS
BEST ESSENTIALS T-SHIRTS FOR MEN
I’ve said this previously, a great tee can be the “MVP” of your wardrobe and regardless of the season it’s always worth having a couple of T-shirts on rotation, with a mixture of prints, patterns and basics.
SpongeBob SquarePants Cactus Plant Flea Market UT Graphic T-shirt, $24.90 from Uniqlo
One that has caught my eye recently is this collab between SpongeBob SquarePants, U.S. label Cactus Plant Flea Market (CPFM) and Uniqlo, which has produced a quirky collection of items related to the iconic animated series, with hoodies, tees and accessories, and including this SpongeBob graphic tee.
The fit and quality of the fabric is similar to Uniqlo’s popular Uniqlo U 100% Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt, and the print design feels both quirky and understated.
I don’t personally want a statement piece that will be too loud, but in this case I reckon I could easily see myself wearing this out and about on the weekend.
Silent Theory Acid Tail Tee 3-Pack, $89 from THE ICONIC
For basics, a three-pack is always a great option to consider, and I like the mix of designs in this Silent Theory Acid Tail Tee pack which is available now from THE ICONIC.
Inspired by street and surf culture, the pieces from this Victorian label feel casual and laid back, likely something you’d wear on the weekend, but you could also easily dress up with nice boots, and a jacket or blazer.
Doyoueven Essential Regular Fit Tee, $45 from THE ICONIC
Activewear is becoming more and more integrated with general fashion looks, and this regular fit tee from Doyoueven is a great example of that.
It’s a fitted cut that’s both breathable and lightweight, and while it’s something you’d typically wear to the gym or an outdoor stroll, this would also look nice with a pair of jeans or chinos.
Loose Fit Vintage Look Print Tee, $34.99 from H&M Australia
Remember passing the merch stand after seeing your favourite band?
You don’t need to do that anymore thanks to H&M, who’ve released a collection of Loose Fit Vintage Look Print Tees.
From The Strokes to Nirvana, Dolly Parton to Talking Heads, these tees make for a great talking point, celebrating a diverse range in music that you don’t really need to overthink if we’re completely honest.
Go for a slightly oversized fit, remember you’re black jeans and sunnies, and you’ve got a winning outfit that will work all-year round.
BEST MEN’S FITTED SHIRT ESSENTIALS
Alongside T-shirts, a couple of long sleeve button up shirts will make for some great matches with other pieces in your wardrobe.
Runaway the Label Jake Shirt in Blue, $129 from THE ICONIC
Runaway the Label has been on my radar lately, and this Jake Shirt is a great example of versatility. This blue shirt is lightweight, great for the workplace, and pairs well with both chinos and boots, or if you want to make things a little more casual and go with shorts and sandals.
The fabric is really nice and made from lightweight cotton, and it’s a semi-relaxed fit, which makes it very comfortable to wear. It’s a little more expensive than some of the other options out there, but I like the quality, and I also like supporting Australian labels. A big thumbs up from me.
Oxford Slim Fit Long Sleeve Shirt, $49.90 from Uniqlo
Meanwhile, Uniqlo’s Oxford Long Sleeve shirt is more than half the price but is excellent value, coming in four colour options (white, grey, light blue and navy), and is made for a variety of body shapes.
I’d be grabbing two of these in different colours and wearing them as overshirts, or wearing in their own right and rolling up the sleeves.
Cotton On Cabana Short Sleeve Shirt, $59.99 from THE ICONIC
Arguably it’s something more suited for the warmer months, but Cotton On’s Cabana Short Sleeve Shirt has a Euro-inspired print that makes for a great statement piece.
Embroidered with attractive buttons and hemlines, this is something I’d be saving for those special occasions.
Plus you’d be getting some mileage if you’re planning to escape the Aussie winter circa July 2025 for a warmer getaway.
BEST MEN’S TOPS ESSENTIALS
Alongside your favourite jacket, one to two solid jumpers or sweatshirts is a great starting point to keep you warm but also looking good.
Ben Sherman Men’s Signature Cotton Crew Neck Jumper, $54.95 from Amazon Australia
Ben Sherman consistently delivers with their high quality range of products and this Men’s Signature Cotton Crew Neck Jumper is both well priced, and versatile in its range of colours (white, navy, and stone).
A knitted cotton jumper is a great staple to have in your arsenal, and will go with just about everything if you pick a great fit and great colour.
Have at least one of these at the ready, and you’ll be all sorted whatever the season.
KAWS + Warhol Sweatshirt, $49.90 from Uniqlo
Like the Spongebob collab we touched on earlier, Uniqlo’s KAWS + Warhol in another recent collection available right now, and includes this sweatshirt, which is a cotton and polyester blend.
I like that it’s not too heavy to wear, meaning it’s actually quite comfortable for a spring evening, and I don’t get too hot if I’m wearing this with a jacket.
You pair it nicely with jeans, or there’s some matching tracksuit pants, socks and a T-shirt if you want to wear the full set.
Adidas Z.N.E. Hoodie, $130 from Myer
Every guy should have at least one hoodie in their wardrobe, and I would normally say go for something more understated in black or dark colours, but I’m really loving this Adidas Z.N.E. Hoodie in Magic Beige.
It feels very luxe, the fabric is a recycled polyester and cotton blend which is so nice to touch, and it has a great level of warmth.
This hoodie is an all-rounder, perfect for training outdoors, a coffee date, a trip to the movies or lounging around at home, living your best life.
BEST MEN’S CHINOS & JEANS ESSENTIALS
Just as important as your shirts, selecting a comfortable pair of jeans or chinos will help you get on with your day, whether it’s work or play.
Calvin Klein Jeans, $119.25 from Amazon Australia
Calvin Klein’s range of slim jeans come in a range of denim washes (black, medium, dark or grey) and are up there with the most comfortable jeans I’ve owned in memory, for both the office and the weekend.
These are excellent for daily wear, I like the fabric blend is also not too heavy, plus they’re also machine washable.
Currently one of the top picks from my wardrobe that’s yet to be beaten.
Runaway The Label Oscar Pant in Sand, $149 from THE ICONIC
Sydney designers Runaway The Label also have these: The Oscar Pant in Sand (or white), which feel like you should be somewhere on a beach, but surprisingly work well in different contexts.
Normally, I would shy away from wearing something like that on a more regular basis, but the fabric quality is excellent and I like the relaxed fit.
It’s more of a footnote too but having a scroll across the socials, the shape and fit of these pants are quite popular right now, and understandably so.
Slim Fit Chino Pants, $59.90 from Uniqlo
In the same way that jeans are a great go-to, don’t underestimate just how awesome a pair of chinos can be too.
Uniqlo is possibly my favourite retailer of the year for their essentials range, which also extends to their Slim Fit Chino Pants.
I’ve been wearing the grey colour now for a few months, and have found they work with just about every other colour in my wardrobe, plus they’re excellent to wear for work or during social time on the weekends.
They’re a little heavier in terms of fabric blend, so keep this in mind for the warmer months, however so far, they’re going the distance either way. At some point I’ll be picking up a second pair in Olive or Navy.
BEST MEN’S FOOTWEAR ESSENTIALS
When you think of a wardrobe collection, don’t forget about your shoes. A mixture of casual trainers and more stylish boots will ensure you’re set for just about any occasion.
Julius Marlow Men’s Kick Chelsea Boot, from $125 at Amazon Australia
I first discovered Julius Marlow boots more than 10 years ago and have loved them ever since. I was more surprised to find out recently they originated as a Melbourne shoemaker, which makes me love them even more.
These Kick Chelsea Boots are high quality and made from leather, and I’d suggest picking a style in Mocha or Black, which are both versatile tones.
They are also extremely comfortable, slip-on, and easy to care for, and a fraction of what you’d be paying for a pair of R.M. William Boots. These are a no-brainer in my opinion.
Lacoste Men’s White Powercourt Sneakers, $99 at Amazon Australia
Like leather boots, white trainers are a good staple to have in an essentials-style wardrobe collection. Lacoste are very reliable, and the brand’s roots as a supplier of tennis-related products means you’re getting a blend of style and function.
These Lacoste Men’s White Powercourt Sneakers are made with leather, have a simple design, and are very comfortable to wear. I’d be wearing these out to social events, but I reckon you’d also get away with lacing them up for the office.
BEST MEN’S UNDERWEAR ESSENTIALS
Shirts, chinos and shoes may help you find a great sense of style, but a supportive pair of undies will keep things in place behind the scenes.
STEP ONE Men’s Bamboo Boxer Brief 3-Pack, $99 at Amazon Australia
Despite their fun marketing campaigns, I’d never really considered Step One until this year and wish I’d bought some sooner.
Their bamboo boxer briefs are up there as among the most comfortable I’ve come across. The bamboo fabric is lightweight and breathable, and there’s some nice colours and patterns available. I’m a big fan of multipacks when it comes to underwear, and this three-pack keeps it all pretty easy and convenient.
Calvin Klein 3-pack Boxer Briefs, $99.95 at THE ICONIC
Equally, Calvin Klein is pretty much a staple when it comes to high quality underwear.
I’ve never been disappointed with a pair of CKs, and these boxer briefs are made from stretch fabric that’s breathable and anti-chafing. I like the understated colour selection of black, white and grey. Sometimes you just need to keep things simple.
Bonds Men’s Everyday Trunks Underwear 5-pack, $55.95 at Amazon Australia
Quintessentially Aussie, and also very affordable, these Bonds trunks are worth your time and attention.
Made from comfy stretch fabric, they have universal appeal, and also cater to a wide range of tastes, and I like that you can pick these up in more basic colours or louder printed designs.
OTHER ITEMS TO INCLUDE IN A MEN’S ESSENTIALS WARDROBE
We’ve got you sorted with shirts, shoes, jeans and undies, but your accessories also go a long way into expressing a sense of personal style and flair.

What’s the difference between an “Essentials” wardrobe and a “Capsule” wardrobe?
Nicole Adolphe, Head of Style at THE ICONIC told news.com.au checkout that an Essentials wardrobe is a collection of base items that every wardrobe requires.
“It’s the pieces that create the foundation, which can be built-up on and paired with more trend-led pieces,” she explained.
“Whereas, a Capsule wardrobe is a collection of a set number of pieces (i.e. 20) that you can mix and match together to create a pre-set series of outfits.
“A Capsule wardrobe is typically more classic, whereas an Essentials wardrobe allows you to build more trend-led and seasonally appropriate outfits, by starting with an Essential.”
What’s the best way to work with different colours and statement pieces in an “Essentials” wardrobe?
“Use accessories for simple ways to make a statement and play with colour,” Nicole added.
“Pick a classic piece, such as a T-shirt, and integrate that in a bold colour or print, paired down with simple items, such as blue jeans.”
