Whether you’re a seasoned runner or finally jumping on the bandwagon, there’s one essential you need: running shoes. A good pair of joggers can make or break your workout, so it’s important to purchase a pair tailored to your individual needs.

According to THE ICONIC’s Performance Footwear Buyer, Steven Waterhouse, finding the perfect pair of men’s running shoes starts with the fit.

“This may seem like an obvious one, however, many don’t know that sizes between a casual versus a running shoe can differ,” Steven told news.com.au checkout.

“Sizing up by at least a half-size is always a good idea to combat against swelling or expansion when running.”

Keen to get your steps up but not sure where to start?

We’ve got your covered, with some of the men’s running shoes out there right now – including the TikTok viral Hoka running shoes that has the internet and Harry Styles obsessed, and the ASICS Gel Kayano 31s, which are like “walking on a little cloud”.

Why we love it: Stylish and fresh colour design

What to consider: Some buyers believe they’re too expensive

Material: Foam, mesh upper

Colour: Cloud White / Lucid Blue / Flash Aqua

Heel Drop: 10mm

What You Need To Know

Suited for general daily exercise and also running, the Adidas Supernova Rise men’s running shoes are designed to deliver on both comfort and support, and feature re-engineered foam that’s been made with recycled materials.

The sole of every Rise is packed with a system of dense bottom-loaded foam ensuring a neutral level of support from heel to toe, in turn creating smooth transitions to help with giving a smooth stride.

Also, the combination of softly supportive cushioned foam and mesh textile around the heel gives a comfortable heel fit for runners. Plus, they actually look great too.

Shoppers have left dozens of 5-star reviews online, saying these trainers are a great option if you’re looking for a competitive edge at your local run club.

“Comfortable and true to size. Fits perfectly. This pair of running shoes put my previous running shoes to shame. Highly recommend,” wrote one shopper.

Another added: “I have 4 pairs of Supernovas for me. They are and have been my favourite trainer for over 4 years now. Get a pair, you won’t regret it.”

My thoughts on the Adidas Supernova Rise men’s running shoes echo much of what I’ve been reading online: these are great quality and a really well-made shoe.

I have been using them for around a month at the gym, for a mixture of cardio on the treadmill and stepper, and during my weights training. In all these settings I feel my feet have had great support, which also extends up to my ankles and calves.

They’re also great if you like cycling, and I’ve been wearing these during my commute to work and on social rides with friends on the weekend.

In terms of sizing, Adidas has always been reliable and I’m really happy with the fit. My toes have enough room to move and the shoe is not too constricting across the front of my feet.

The material is lightweight and breathable, I would say if I was more into outdoor running I would probably select a product that’s waterproof, as I can see how the mesh upper might get a bit waterlogged if I was running on grass.

In my case, that’s definitely not a deal-breaker. Rather, I’m really happy with the Adidas Supernova Rise men’s running shoes, which could be possibly my favourite ever pair of trainers.

Why we love it: Lightweight and great for basketball and running

What to consider: Mesh upper will not be waterproof

Material: Mesh, foam, leather

Colour: Halo Grey, White

What You Need To Know

Under Armour has teamed up with US basketball star and Olympian Stephen Curry for the Curry 12s, which as the name suggests, is the 12th inception of his signature shoe.

Building on the popular elements of the Curry 11, the Curry 12 blends a focus on both performance and style. Plus, they’re great for basketball and more general activities like running and gym workouts.

Featuring a light grey upper with vibrant green and black accents, the ‘Gravity’ colourway has a striking blend of grey, white, black and accents of fluorescent yellow, and has been designed for great midsole cushioning and support.

Dozens of happy shoppers have given these the 5-star seal of approval, saying they’re lightweight, comfortable to wear and have a great level of ankle support.

“These Curry’s are comfortable and lightweight. I feel the security while being able to jump, jab, pivot and run. I feel like I’m running on air. Real comfort for real,” said one shopper.

Another thrilled customer said: “This shoe is FIRE, comfortable, very nice looking, and deserves a gold medal in the Olympics. In the future these shoes will be iconic for the new generation to watch and see, definitely adding to my collection.”

While my basketball days are seemingly behind me, these Curry 12 Gravity Basketball Shoes from Under Armour are a great all-rounder if you’re looking for running shoes to hit the pavement outside, or if you’re jumping on the treadmill at the gym.

I love the little design touches on the shoe, including the fluoro yellow accents on the tongue, side and front section.

The quality of the materials used is great, the mesh is breathable, and the foam sole is lightweight and supportive. There’s a great level of traction, which is most notable when I’m doing sprints on the treadmill or at the local oval where I train.

Personally, the Stephen Curry collaboration would not be a major selling point for me, however if you’re a massive basketball fan I can understand the appeal, with some of the little details like Curry’s signature included on the base of the shoe.

Instead, I look for a great mix of the design features I’ve already touched on, which do exceed expectations, and at $240 it’s also a fair price. If you’re after a versatile all-rounder, the Curry 12 Gravity Basketball Shoes deserve your consideration.

I’ve been wearing the ASICS Gel Kayano 31 Men’s Trainers for around a month and I’m really impressed with their fit and performance, it really feels like I’m walking on a little cloud.

I first tried them out during a morning walk to the Sydney Opera House as part of a special event hosted by ASICS, it was a great opportunity to test out their wear on harder surfaces and also be taken through the features, design and technology that’s been integrated into the product.

Overall, the ASICS Gel Kayano 31 Men’s Trainers are great all-rounder and really deliver highly across design, comfort and support.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING RUNNING SHOES

When choosing running shoes to include in our list, we evaluated several factors:

Fabric: Lightweight materials will ensure the shoe is breathable and doesn’t get too hot during a run. Knitted materials also provide extra support through their hug-like fabric.

Support: Whether you need strong arch support, extra cushioning through the midsole or a bouncy boost to your step, finding the right support system in a running shoe is crucial.

Lacing system: Tying a shoe too tight or too loose can be extremely detrimental to a run so finding a lacing system that allows for the perfect tightness is very important.

Durability: How long will the shoe last? Is it suitable for all weather?

Grip: A strong grip on the shoe is not only good for trail running but also for wet weather and other more intense environments such as up and downhill running.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

Our team of experienced writers spend hours researching products to include in articles. We find out what factors make a good product by talking to experts, reviewing test results and analysing thousands of customer reviews.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE BEST HEEL DROP FOR RUNNING SHOES?

Traditionally, a heel drop in a running shoe is around 10mm or more. This works to offer extra cushioning in the heel and also promotes a good running style by ensuring the toe lands first.

SHOULD I BUY RUNNING SHOES IN A BIGGER SIZE?

Buying the right size is arguably the most important step in buying running shoes. You want to make sure you have extra for your toes because when you run – especially when you run far – the feet naturally expand. With this in mind, experts recommend buying running shoes around half a size larger than your normal shoe size.

IS IT NORMAL FOR RUNNING SHOES TO HURT AT FIRST?

Like all shoes, sometimes it can take a little while for a new running shoe to soften and feel good while you run. But if this continues after the fourth or fifth run then do not keep wearing them as this can do more than good.
