Shaving, waxing, using an epilator, cream or even an IPL laser hair device – how you choose to remove your body hair (if you want to remove it at all) is totally up to you.

There’s so many options on the market, all you need to do is find the one that works best for you.

Never tried using an epilator before? You may want to give the handheld device a red-hot go given its results are long-lasting and effective.

To get a better understanding of how an epilator works, we spoke to Dr Samantha Eisman, Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists.

“An epilator is an electronic device that removes hair by the roots, using spring coils/plates/discs that in effect tweeze multiple hairs at the same time,” Dr Samantha Eisman, Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, told news.com.au.

According to Dr Eisman, epilators can work on hair “as short as 0.5mm” and they won’t cause hair to grow back darker and thicker.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING AN EPILATOR

Epilating is a favourite hair removal method because it’s low cost, convenient, your hair doesn’t need to completely regrow in between treatments like waxing and there’s no waste products (think disposable razors or blades).

To help you find the best epilator on the market, there’s a few things you need to consider, according to Dr Eisman.

Type of removal method

Epilator devices will usually have one of three removal methods. Spring type is the original and oldest, offering more chances to remove hair although it can pinch the skin at times.

If you want something that’s less painful and more durable, go for a rotating disk type. But by far the most common is the tweeze type, which mimics the act of tweezers.

Features

Do you want it to be corded or cordless? Battery operated? Do you want to be able to use it wet or dry? Are different head attachments, sizes and speeds important to you?

If you’re using an epilator on the go, you may want to consider purchasing one with built-in lighting, or one with quiet noise levels.

CAN AN EPILATOR BE USED ON ALL PARTS OF THE BODY?

Most epilators can be used on all parts of the body, with some models offering different attachments that’s better suited to a particular area.

HOW DOES AN EPILATOR WORK ON SENSITIVE SKIN AND OTHER SKIN CONDITIONS LIKE ECZEMA?

According to Dr Eisman, if you’ve got sensitive skin or other skin conditions like eczema, you’re going to want to use with caution.

“Always do a test area,” she said.

“Epilators are probably better than shaving, waxing and hair removal creams as there’s less effect on the direct skin … hair gripping takes place above the skin, therefore leading to less irritation.”

HOW OFTEN CAN I USE AN EPILATOR AND HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

Dr Eisman says it depends on hair type, thickness and genetics, however over time, the hairs will start to grow thinner and stop growing altogether.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS INVOLVED WITH EPILATING?

Like all hair removal methods, there are a few risks or side effects to consider. But there’s things you can do to stop them in their tracks.

To avoid ingrown hairs, make sure you exfoliate before and after.

To combat redness, ensure you are moisturising after epilating.
