When it comes to hair, we all know that brushes are not created equally. And if you ask us a detangling brush is at the top of the pyramid.
“The main difference between a normal brush and a detangling brush lies in their design and functionality,” says celebrity hairstylist and founder of Cole Hair in Double Bay, Mariah Rota. According to Rota, detangling brushes are specifically designed to handle tangles and knots in the hair more effectively. “They typically have wide-spaced bristles that are flexible and gentle on the hair, minimising damage and breakage during detangling,” she says.
As someone with thick, curly hair a detangling brush is a true godsend. And honestly, I wish I started using one sooner. It would have saved many a tear back in the day when my mum would try getting all my knots out.
There are many factors to consider when buying a detangling brush including bristles, material and design according to Rota. Luckily we’ve done the hard work for you and collated the best detangling brushes for you by brands like Tangle Teezer, Christophe Robin, JS Health and more.

WHEN AND HOW SHOULD YOU USE A DETANGLING BRUSH?
“A detangling brush can be used either with conditioner on wet hair or before blow-drying after shampooing,” says Rota.
“When using it with conditioner, apply the conditioner to your wet hair and gently comb through with the detangling brush to remove tangles and knots. Alternatively, you can use the detangling brush before blow-drying to smooth out any tangles and make the styling process easier.”
CAN ALL HAIR TYPES USE A DETANGLING BRUSH?
Yes, detangling brushes can be used on all hair types. However, the time it takes to detangle the hair may vary depending on the thickness and texture of the hair according to Rota.
“Thicker hair or hair with extensions may require more time and effort to detangle, so it’s recommended to work in smaller sections and be patient when using a detangling brush,” she suggests.
WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK OUT FOR WHEN BUYING A DETANGLING BRUSH?
When buying a detangling brush, Rota says there are a few factors to consider:
Bristles: Look for wide-spaced bristles that can easily glide through the hair without causing excessive pulling or tugging. This design helps to minimise breakage and damage.
Material: If you intend to use the brush on wet hair, it’s best to choose a detangling brush with nylon or plastic bristles, as these materials are less likely to cause damage when the hair is wet.
Design: Consider the overall design of the brush. Look for a comfortable handle grip and a shape that fits well in your hand for easy maneuverability.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER PRODUCTS YOU WOULD USE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DETANGLING BRUSH?
In addition to using a detangling brush, it’s beneficial to use other hair products that can aid in detangling and provide moisture. Rota’s recommended product is a leave-in conditioner spray or cream.
She says, “Applying a leave-in conditioner after using the detangling brush can help to further smoothen and hydrate the hair, making it easier to manage. Genesis by Kérastase is a preferred choice for a leave-in conditioner, known for its nourishing properties.”
