The prime suspect in the murder of gangland figure Nabil Maghnie is feared to have fled overseas.

It is believed the man was able to get out of Australia in the period after Maghnie was shot dead in Melbourne’s northern suburbs on January 9 this year.

Maghnie arrived at a Daltons Rd, Epping, property that night and, after an altercation with a resident, was shot dead.

His son Abbas and an associate were wounded and a fourth member of the visiting party was uninjured.

The man under investigation over the shooting is believed to be of Middle-Eastern background.

It is not clear whether he slipped out of the country under his own identity or by using false credentials.

The man had been a key person of interest to police from the earliest stages of the Maghnie homicide inquiry.

The suspect may also have been concerned he would find himself a target for Maghnie’s associates angry over the death of their mate.

One eyewitness said the shooter fired on Maghnie and the others in clear view until he ran out of bullets.

One said he looked calm and unconcerned, crossing the street to shoot Abbas after moments earlier blasting his father and the third victim.

Victoria Police declined to comment on the suspect or its investigation when contacted by the Herald Sun.

Maghnie was gunned down soon after arriving at the Dalton Rd house.

Investigators are believed to have examined whether his daughter, Sabrine, was involved in a road rage incident with a man from the Daltons Rd property in the period before the fatal confrontation.

It is believed Maghnie demanded a large sum of money as compensation.

He was a feared figure in Melbourne’s underworld with a reputation for being a prolific triggerman and having strong links to the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang.

He had twice survived being shot and is suspected of being linked to many unsolved shootings across Melbourne.

It was revealed last year that Maghnie was under investigation over the double-fatal drive-by shooting at the Love Machine nightclub in April and the murder of Mitat Rasimi at Dandenong in March.

His son, Jacob Elliott, 18, is on remand in relation to the the Love Machine incident, in which security guard Aaron Osmani and patron Richard Arow were fatally wounded.
