The daughter of gangland figure Nabil Maghnie was allegedly assaulted in a road-rage incident weeks before he was shot dead.

A photo of Sabrine Maghnie, 20, taken in the period before last Thursday’s fatal confrontation in which her father died appears to show a bruise under her left eye.

Maghnie family supporters say Sabrine was assaulted after a minor car crash in the northern suburbs.

Things are alleged to have turned physical after the collision, which was later reported to police by the other vehicle’s male driver.

Nabil Maghnie, who was laid to rest on Wednesday at Fawkner, was fiercely protective of his daughter.

He is said to have been deeply angered by the alleged assault and last Thursday night he and three other men – one his son Abbas – travelled to a house in Dalton Rd, Lalor.

The Herald Sun has been told Nabil Maghnie demanded a large sum of money from a man at the property.

That man was then assaulted before another person emerged with a gun and started shooting.

Nabil, 44, died on the road and two others were wounded.

One of them was Abbas, who ran with a leg wound to a nearby Taco Bill restaurant to get help.

He was taken to hospital but discharged himself soon after and returned to the scene with a bloodied knee.

Sabrine was allegedly ejected from the Love Machine nightclub in the period before last April’s drive-by shooting in which two men standing outside the venue were killed.

Her father was a suspect in the subsequent murder investigation by Taskforce Sector detectives.

Another of Nabil’s sons, Jacob Elliott, 18, was one of two men later charged with the murder of patron Richard Arow and security guard Aaron Osmani.

Homicide squad detectives are working to piece together exactly what happened at Lalor last Thursday.

No charges have been laid over the shooting.

Several hundred people gathered to pay tribute to Maghnie as he was farewelled at Fawkner Memorial Park in Melbourne’s northern suburbs on Wednesday.

Members of Maghnie’s family, including some of his children, hugged and sobbed as his casket arrived in the Sugar Gum section of the sprawling cemetery at 2.30pm.

A floral tribute spelling out the word “Baba”, which means father in Arabic and spiritual leader in Islam, was displayed next to where the feared standover man was buried.

Victoria Police had a presence at the funeral, with several police cars stationed in the streets surrounding the cemetery.

Mourners arrived in an array of vehicles from run-down Holdens to luxury BMWs, Range Rovers, Audis and Mercedes.

When the funeral service got underway his family and friends said prayers over the casket while swatting away flies at the hot and windy memorial park.

While Maghnie is believed to have had close links with the Comancheros, no members of the bikie gang attended the funeral wearing their colours.
