A young Melbourne woman with links to Islamic State smiled as she fronted court charged charged with serious terrorism offences.

Hadasha Sa’adat Khan, 22, appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday evening charged with recruiting a person to join and engage in a service to aid the deadly terrorist organisation Islamic State.

Wearing a hijab, Ms Sa’adat Khan, from Hallam, entered the court smiling and laughed nervously before rearranging her scarf to completely hide her face from the full courtroom.

The court heard it was her first time in custody and she was vulnerable due to her young age and the fact she wears a hijab.

It is alleged she had an online link to an Australian fighter and member of Islamic State.

She is charged with performing services for a person who is intending to enter a foreign country and engage in hostile activity, recruiting a person to participate in the activities of a terrorist organisation and associating with a terrorist organisation.

Charge sheets released by the court allege the offending took place between June 15-21 in 2016 when Ms Sa’adat Khan was 18.

She was formally charged on Tuesday and did not apply for bail.

The commonwealth prosecutor requested an extension of time to prepare the brief of evidence, saying federal agents would need extra time to conduct extensive digital forensic analysis on Ms Sa’adat Khan’s phone.

Ms Sa’adat Khan remained silent throughout the administrative hearing and nodded while holding her headscarf over her eyes as she was told she would return to court in June.

She faces life imprisonment if found guilty of the alleged crimes.
