Roberta Williams wanted another baby with Carl Williams only weeks before he would go to jail for the rest of his life.

As Roberta attempted to cast herself as an “ordinary mum” to the public in 2004, she told Williams she “wishes she was pregnant now”.

The couple already had a daughter together, Dhakota, who had been born in March 2001.

By May 31, 2004, Roberta had been tired for months of a life where she lived apart from the gangland boss who was up to mischief in his city apartment.

A police helicopter overhead, shining a light on her Essendon street, had just raised her angst.

But Carl was unfazed.

“The sooner they learn … that this state is mine, we will get along better,” a defiant Carl barked.

“You’re an idiot,” was his weary wife’s reply.

Roberta then suggested the helicopter might be tracking Carl’s car, which was outside her house.

“They’ll be thinking, ‘why’s his car here?’,” she said.

“They know this is my state...,” Carl continued, unperturbed.

It is clear in 2004 the couple were aware they were the key targets of the anti-gangland Purana Taskforce.

Further transcripts of phone taps reveal Roberta was distressed about the lonely lifestyle she was leading, as the gangland war body count rose.

She told Williams she was lonely, worried and scared.

Their marriage was also on the rocks.

Roberta knew her philandering husband was living each day like it was his last, as he hopped from nightclub to strip club to brothel.

For months they fought over the phone.

A February 2004 conversation highlights the growing tension between them.

“I’m so angry … you don’t give a f--- about me,’’ she said.

“You cause every argument between us and I’ve realised that. I think you just should leave me alone, Carl, ‘cause I’m not living a life like this.’’

Williams could only say “yeah, OK,’’ before the call ended.
