A Melbourne man charged with running a brothel in Bali has asked to be taken to hospital amid concerns he has pancreatic cancer.

Michael Le Grand, 50, pleaded with Indonesian police for a medical check on Monday, his lawyer said.

It comes as Le Grand, and his wife Lynley, 44, were questioned for the first time about allegations their Pink Palace spa in Bali was being run as a brothel.

There were also allegations that an underage girl was working as a massage therapist at the spa they owned.

Indonesian police claimed that the Pink Palace Spa was making up to $286,000 per month before they were raided last week.

The couple were taken from the Denpasar police station to an interrogation room, according to video footage.

Their lawyer, Joniono Rahardjo, said on Monday that Michael Le Grand was in need of medical attention.

“Today he will be examined by a doctor to check a serious illness and then he will apply for hospitalisation,” he said outside the Denpasar police station.

When asked about the nature of his illness, his lawyer said: “Pancreas cancer and also chronic abdominal pain.”

Michael Le Grand was expected to see a doctor late on Monday or Tuesday, his lawyer said.

His wife was also likely to “accompany” him to the hospital.

The couple had been well established in Bali’s ex-pat community, operating the Spa, two pubs called GOAT – Greatest of All Time – and the Corner House restaurant in Seminyak.

The Corner House won an award for the best casual restaurant in Bali in October.

The Le Grand’s also rented out luxury villas in Bali.

The couple were previously linked to a $3.6 million home in Sandringham, which was sold in 2021.

Their luxury Bali villa, which included a pool set amid landscaped gardens, was built soon after, according to their social media posts.

Prostitution is illegal in Indonesia, a majority Muslim country, with the couple facing up to 12 years’ jail if convicted.

Their arrests came after another massage venue, Flame Spa, linked to former Essendon star Ricky Olarenshaw, was also subject to allegations that it was offering sexual services.

Mr Olarenshaw’s ex-wife, Sarnanitha, who was the registered owner of the Flame Spa, has claimed that she was duped by the former Bombers star.

Mr Olarenshaw, who is believed to be in Australia, has not returned calls.
