‘You said you were at home’: Carl Williams’ strip club jaunt lands him in hot water with wife Roberta

After catching Carl lying about a strip club jaunt, a furious Roberta Williams warned him that one night she will “cause a scene” and “smash anyone” near him.

Carl Williams is on the phone to his wife, Roberta, and can barely hear her.

He is out with his new best mate, Sean Sonnet, who has just been released from jail.

They are at Goldfingers strip club when Williams calls Roberta to check on his little girl, Dhakota.

The gangland boss has been softened by text messages from two-year-old Dhakota – of course written by Roberta – which have arrived on his phone during the night, including: “I love the football.’’

“I’ll take her to the footy,’’ Williams promises, but he is coy about what he’s up to tonight.

It’s February 21, 2004, and he’s out on the tiles again.

The night before, Williams boasts, he had bumped into Wayne Johnston at Crown Casino’s Heat nightclub and the Carlton great had offered to get him tickets to a game.

It catches him in a lie and another argument erupts.

“You said you were at home. You didn’t leave your place,’’ Roberta says.

A cowed Williams is forced to fess up that he’s out again, this time at Goldfingers.

Later he needs to drop in to Heat again, to show Sonnet around he says, and will be home by midnight.

Sonnet, who Williams did jail time with, has just got out after 18 months in the slot and they have just come into the strip club. “His head is swivelling everywhere,’’ Williams jokes about Sonnet, trying to deflect attention from himself.

His underworld mate even asks a “sheila” who offers him a dance “how far will this get me, twenty cents?” Williams jokes. He promises to leave him after they go to Heat.

“I’ll ring ya, if you’re awake …’’ he says.

It’s not enough to appease Roberta.

“Yeah Carl, cos I’m getting angry, like it’s like you’re just partyin’ every night and don’t give a f--k,’’ she snaps.

Williams pleads that he has to show Sonnet around while Roberta says she is “sitting around like a scumbag on my own every night”.

Roberta has plenty on her mind though.

She is preparing for a big TV interview, which has the Gangland boss perplexed.

Both Carl and Roberta are flirting with fame amid the publicity surrounding them and Melbourne’s gangland war.

“Did you do yourself up for the show?” he asks her.

On a roll, Carl teases her about how 900,000 people will be watching and maybe she should try acting, but she is not in the mood for joking.

Dhakota says something, but Williams says he can’t hear, as the conversation is drowned out by the music blaring through Goldfingers.

“I’ll just tell her where you are – do you want me to,’’ Roberta gibes.

“Don’t say that – where I am. Say he’s out having a drink,’’ he pleads

“No, but hang on Carl. You must like a girl at one of them places to keep goin’ back there every night,’’ Roberta suggests.

“I don’t come here every night,” he protests.

“Ya do Carl,” an unimpressed Roberta responds.

“I’m gonna walk in there one night and it’s gonna be a scene I’m gonna cause. Cos I’ll just smash anyone near ya ... cos I’ve had it mate.’’

At this point that Roberta explains how being at the strippers while your family stays at home is indefensible.

“But I wouldn’t Carl. ‘Cos why would I wanna see some man strippin’ and showin’ his d--k everywhere,’’ she says.

Dhakota is put on the phone, but can only hear the music.

“What’s that noise,” the girl asks.

Roberta threatens to tell her exactly where her father is.

Eventually, she softens just a little, explaining: “It’s music. Daddy’s at a disco.’’
