Porsche driver Richard Pusey is fighting for an insurance payout for his sports car, which was mangled in the horror Eastern Freeway crash which killed four police officers.

Pusey, regarded as the “most hated man in Australia’’ for filming dying police hit by a truck which veered into the emergency lane of the Eastern Freeway, has been desperate to claw back the cost of his German speed machine while in jail.

Pusey had been pulled over by police for allegedly speeding in his Porsche moments before the crash.

The Saturday Herald Sun understands Pusey has been denied a payout by two insurance firms.

His own insurer baulked at handing over more than $250,000 for the Porsche after it emerged Pusey had not disclosed his prior indiscretions to the company.

But then he tried to get cash out of Connect Logistics – the company that owned the semi-trailer driven by Mohinder Singh that crashed into police vehicles in Kew on April 22, 2020, killing four officers.

It is understood the trucking company’s insurer also refused to pay for the wrecked Porsche.

It is unclear whether the claim was resolved.

Reports last year said that he failed a roadside drug test after being pulled over for speeding, coming up positive for methamphetamine and cannabis. It is unclear why he was not charged over the results, but one possibility is he fled before an evidentiary test could be taken.

A roadside positive may have been enough to complicate the insurance issue because it gives an indication of a chain of events that would not have happened if he was not illegally on the road.

Mr Singh was on the drug ice and delusional when he got behind the wheel of the truck.

Singh, 49, was convicted of culpable driving causing the deaths of Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King and constables Glen Humphris and Josh Prestney.

Pusey, 43, was a free man for just three weeks after being released from a 10-month jail sentence for his acts following the Eastern Freeway crash, and 120 days for other minor charges.

He will make an application for bail next month after he was arrested in September charged with stalking and assaulting police. He appeared briefly in the Neighbourhood Justice Centre this month, where his lawyer, Philip Dunn QC, said he would make a bail bid on November 11.

Connect Logistics declined to comment when contacted by the Saturday Herald Sun.
