A Melbourne teacher who molested a child for nearly two decades and sold videos of the abuse online has been jailed for his vile crimes.

Mulia Marzuki, 51, was sentenced to 18 years behind bars on Friday for offending County Court Judge Peter Wischusen described as “appalling, depraved, callous and disturbing”.

Marzuki, who undertook placements at River Gum Primary School and Wellington Secondary College while completing a teaching degree, uploaded videos and images of him sexually abusing a child onto websites he owned and operated between 2001 and 2019.

Paedophiles from Australia and overseas, many of whom were arrested, paid Marzuki $128,000 for the material.

It took investigators 12 months to analyse more than 10,000 images and videos that were uncovered at Marzuki’s home following a raid in 2019.

Marzuki coerced his victim into taking part in more vile acts by sending fake emails that threatened she would be raped unless more material was uploaded.

Judge Wischusen said Marzuki’s “abhorrent” offending required a high degree of planning and premeditation and was used to satisfy his own perverted sexual gratification.

“This was extremely serious offending,” he said.

“Your moral culpability for this offending is very high.”

Marzuki, who initially faced more than 150 charges, pleaded guilty to nine offences including maintaining a sexual relationship with a child under the age of 16 and producing and publishing child abuse material.

Marzuki worked as a casual relief teacher before his arrest but had his registration cancelled by the Victorian Institute of Teaching last year due to a negative notice against his Working With Children Check.

He was born in Indonesia but moved to Melbourne when he was child and completed a computer science degree and psychology course before enrolling in a Master of Teaching at Monash University in 2018.

Judge Wischusen sentenced Marzuki to 18 years behind bars with a non-parole period of 13 years and six months.

Appearing via video link from Hopkins Correctional Centre, Marzuki was silent and emotionless as the judge read the sentence.
