A man who was allegedly kidnapped by Hells Angels boss Luke Moloney over an unpaid debt has failed to show up to court to give evidence.

Moloney and co-accused Mohammed Allouche and Jaidyn Karaan are facing charges over an alleged kidnapping and home invasion in South Yarra on June 1.

On the first day of a committal hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court to test the evidence against the accused, the prosecution’s star witness, the alleged victim, failed to appear.

Lawyers for the men flagged they would push for the charges to be dropped unless the man showed up to testify, with the hearing stood down for two hours on Thursday while prosecutors tried to contact him.

After the adjournment, prosecutors said they had spoken with the man and he would give evidence on Friday.

Other witnesses testified on Thursday, including a former worker from Chappeli’s cafe on Chapel Street who said she served the trio and the other man at her work on the morning of the alleged kidnapping.

The woman said the men appeared “amicable” and she was asked to be a witness as they signed a document for the transfer of ownership of a vehicle.

A mechanic told the court the alleged victim came to his workshop looking to sell his motorbike on the same day.

“He looked like a junkie, he looked like not a nice bloke,” he said.

The men also came to the shop but the mechanic said he did not “think much of it” and he presumed they were mates with the man because they bought him lunch and an Uber ride home after the motorbike was left overnight.

“I thought he was one of their friends,” he said.

It was only when police conducted a search warrant at the workshop the following day that he suspected something had happened, the mechanic said.

Echo task force detectives arrested the men on June 14, with warrants carried out in Reservoir and Brunswick.

Moloney, who is a veteran member of the outlaw bikie gang and has risen to prominence as a leader in recent years, was at the time on bail for other alleged offences but is now behind bars on remand.

The hearing will continue on Friday.
