An AFL legend’s teenage son has been seriously injured after he was crushed by a kart in a horror crash in Melbourne.
Nathan Buckley’s son, Jett, was driving a racing kart on a track during a practice session on Tuesday when he was thrown from the vehicle.
“I was thrown from the kart, down an embankment, landing on the tarmac with the kart landing on top of me,” he wrote on social media.
“I have lacerated my kidney and liver … I have also snapped my clavicle.
“My elbow and forearm are yet to be determined, waiting for scans.”
Jett is now home and on the mend.
And despite sustaining serious injuries he says he’s not deterred and can’t wait to get back out there.
“I’m home. I’m well and I’m on the road to recovery,” Jett posted Thursday night.
“Like all sports, karting has it’s dangerous elements but we follow a set of strict protocols before every practice session and every race.
“This was an accident.
“It’s these protocols (including the safety gear I wear like a 2nd skin) that protected me and that will have me up and about in quick time.
“Upon reflection over the last 48 hours there is no doubt that I love this sport more than anything. I cannot wait to get back into my kart!
“Thank god for my saviours, my @arai_australia_nz helmet @jeckoracing rib protector, my @offset.sport suit and gloves and my @alpinestars boots.
“To my home track @gokartclubofvictoria this is my 2nd home and I cannot wait to get back out there.
“Thank you to everyone @kartingaust and @kartingvic along with the wider karting community for all their support.”
It’s understood the crash was caused by a brake line split.
The teen shared multiple photos on social media including images from the ambulance and hospital.
He also posted a photo of the x-ray of his collarbone.
It's believed Jett has been kart racing for years and is coached by Brad Jenner, an Australian karting champion.
Jett is the eldest son of Collingwood legend Buckley who played 280 AFL games and won the 2003 Brownlow Medal.
He transitioned into media roles with Fox Footy and SEN after he stepped down as the Pies’ coach in 2021 after 10 years in the job.
Buckley has previously spoken about the similarities between coaching and parenting.
“When you go to coaches courses it instructs you what to look out for in your relationships with your kids,’’ he said.
“It’s a personal journey. But there are really strong similarities. You’re trying to look after, create a relationship and encourage and support young men to do what they want to do, and if that’s not what being a dad is, then what is?
“Absolutely I love it. I love the club environment. I love not feeling the pressure that it’s all you, that there are other guys who step up at other times.”
