Alleged gunman Luke Wilson-Hickey faces court over wild road rage spat

An alleged gunman has faced court over a terrifying road rage spat in Fawkner, in which one man was shot and others were terrorised with weapons.

An alleged gunman has fronted court over a wild road rage spat in which one man was shot and others were terrorised with weapons.

Luke Wilson-Hickey, 21, faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with nine offences over the terrifying daylight attack in Fawkner.

CCTV footage showed multiple shots being fired at a group of men who were chased with baseball bats following a car ramming at Charles Mutton Reserve about 6pm on February 29.

Five men were seated inside a white Nissan Skyline when it was rammed by a gold Holden Rodeo allegedly stolen from Bundoora the same day.

Police have linked the violence to an earlier road rage incident between the Nissan and a black Cherry SUV less than an hour earlier.

CCTV released by police showed four males running from the stolen Holden and firing several shots at the five men before going after them with baseball bats.

The alleged assailants returned to the Holden about 90 seconds later, fleeing the scene before crashing into a red Mazda hatch on the Western Ring Road minutes later.

The Mazda driver was uninjured.

However a 19-year-old Clifton Hill man who was in the white Nissan required hospital treatment for a gunshot wound to the upper body.

He was seated in the Nissan’s driver seat when he was shot in the arm through the window.

Mr Wilson-Hickey, from Heidelberg West, was charged by Armed Crime Squad detectives this week following a five-month investigation.

Charge sheets reveal he was prohibited from using a firearm at the time of the incident.

Police have charged him with offences including reckless conduct endangering life, affray, driving while disqualified and driving in a dangerous manner.

Wearing prison greens, Mr Wilson-Hickey was beamed into the courtroom on Friday from medium-security Marngoneet Correctional Centre.

The court heard he was already remanded on unrelated charges and suffers a “mild intellectual” problem.

A 28-year-old Fawkner man was also charged by police this week with intentionally cause injury, affray, criminal damage, assault with weapon, driving disqualified and theft.

Both arrests came days after footage of the attack was released by police.

Detective Inspector Adam Tilley said the use of firearms in a public place was “particularly concerning”.

“This is a particularly concerning incident, especially given innocent members of the public were present. Such a reckless use of firearms had the potential for a significantly more devastating outcome,” he said.

Mr Wilson-Hickey will reappear in court on November 25.

The investigation continues.
