The AFL SEQ Div 1 under 17 girls season roared on during round 2 action which saw Surfers Paradise Demons topple Burleigh in a local derby on the Gold Coast.
QAFL ROUND 5 BEST ON GROUND, HOW YOUR TEAM FARED
The Surfers Paradise Demons kicked things off on Friday night, with the Demons beating the Burleigh Bombers 7-7-49 to 2-6-18.
Burleigh were well in the match entering the final term, but Surfers went bang, bang and bang to bring home the victory with a 4-1 final term burst.
“It was a great game from the girls and they certainly stepped up to the challenge to defeat the premiers from last year,’’ said Surfers coach Chanel Fletcher. More on that match below.

Victoria Point Sharks 1-6-12 def Maroochy Roos 1-4-10; Broadbeach def Wilston Grange 6-9-45 to 12, Sandgate Hawks inched past Southport, 3.0 to 1.4, Wests Juniors created 11 scoring chances to beat Coorparoo while Sherwood beat Yeronga in a tight, tough clash.

AFL SEQ UNDER 17 GIRLS: HOW ROUND 1 UNFOLDED
PLAYERS OF THE ROUND
Sunny Lappin (Surfers)
Lappin was comfortably best on the ground, hunting the footy and completely opening up the game with her clearing kicks. She also kicked a couple of goals playing midfield while also rotating forward.
Chelsea Lee and Chaise Montey (Surfers)
The girls were key in defence with their intercept marks and brave smothers and strong tackles.
Ella Willis (Surfers)
At fullback Willis was crucial and shut down the Burleigh forwards. Her reading of the footy and attack at the ball was awesome.
Millar Brosnan (Burleigh)
Brosnan played strongly in the ruck, positioning her body well and working tirelessly all game.
Alicia Gordon (Surfers)
One of the more demanding roles in the competition is playing opposite Burleigh young gun Alannah Welsh. She is super talented but Surfers’ midfielder Gordon noticed her impact and stopped her run.
Tyra Bell-Brooks and Georgia Hunt (Victoria Point)
Bell Brooks was a sensation with her intercept marking in defence while Hunt was exceptional in defence and cool under pressure, often beating multiple opponents.
Harriet Knijff and Anneliese Neary (Victoria Point)
Both midfield aces, Knijff played strongly, with her tackling pressure bustling the opposition. Neary ran hard around the traffic and gave her side a contest all day.
Sienna Burnham (Broadbeach)
The All Australian selection was clearly best on ground in the Cats win.. CC’s speed and football ability through the middle was a handful.
Charlotte Newth and Halle Cunningham (Broadbeach)
Broadbeach beat the Gorillas for several reasons, but it all started with the back players where this pair were fabulous.

Lataya Depauw, Jemma Foley and Bella Fernandez (Maroochydore)
There was not a struck match in the clash and this terrific trio tilted the clash their team’s way with tremendous performances across the game.
Sammy Snowden, Madd Pfitzner (Wests Juniors)
Snowden as a defensive mid and Pfitzner was ruck were terrific for Wests Juniors, consistently doing their jobs.
Megan Bradshaw and Edie McCabe (Wests Juniors)
McCabe was a target at half forward while Bradshaw showed her versatility on the wing or up forward.
Riley Gordon (Sandgate)
The first year player was outstanding in taking on the game at both ends of the ground.
Rania Shelford (Sandgate)
Shelford produced great defensive efforts in a tight match, and also offered a running game.
Shakhyah Knights (Sandgate)
Knights had a huge running game, especially helping down back, while Amy Sharp, Tara Bettington and Stella Glyde deserve special mentions.
Chloe Harrison, Aliyah Daniel and Emma Bracegirdle (Coorparoo)
As a midfield against quality opposition, this trio stood up all day.
Sienna Ibrahim, Imogen Smith and Monique Perry (Coorparoo)
This terrific trio were relentless for the Roos on the ball and provided a physical contest.
Tayla Summer (Wilston Grange)
Summer was the Gorillas’ best with her unrelenting attack on the ball and general play.
Mia Geere (Wilston Grange)
The representative player showed her class with lots of possessions and run out of the back line.
Morgan Whalley and Alyssa Kennedy (Wilston Grange)
Whalley was dangerous intercepting across half back while Alyssa Kennedy showed plenty of class and composure out on the wing.
Gizel Malherb and Peyton Mackie (Southport)
This dynamic duo were tremendous for the Sharks, with Gizel dominating the ruck and Mackie skilled and tough.
Jordan Donnelly (Southport)
In a close loss, Donnelly played a tough captain’s game.
Stella Scott (Sherwood)
The tall midfielder got a lot of the ball, made some good tackles and bounced her side down the field.
Sophie David and Zoe Tame (Sherwood)
Across half back, David shone while Zoe Tame was reliable at fullback. She was just strong all day.
Dina Bizimana, Eliza Haighs, Summer Bucknell, Sophie Dunne and Ila Stretter (Yeronga)
How awesome these girls were from Yeronga pushed their rivals very hard. They led the way and were a shining example to the new or inexperienced player in the squad the way they got the hard ball.
Stella Edgar (Morningside)
Playing in her new role as half back, Edgar was best on ground for the Panthers. “She was moved from her usual forward position and provided exactly the attacking spark we were looking for,’’ said coach Alan McGrath.
Eden Taylor, Mabel Dart, Mian Vincent and Poppy Priestly (Morningside)
Captain Eden Taylor had another strong game in the ruck, while forwards Mabel Dart and Poppy Priestley were dangerous. Mia Vincent also showed “some hints of what she’ll be capable of in only her second game of football. Another fantastic sign for our rebuild”, said coach Alan McGrath.
THE MATCHES
Burleigh v Surfers
Burleigh coach Emily Otto said Surfers Paradise brought it's A game to the party and it was a solid contest.
“We dominated possession in the first half but just couldn’t convert and get the reward for the time we spent in our forward half,’’ Otto said.
“But I really liked our ability to create repeat forward entries all game.’’
For the winners, Surfers coach Fletcher said Burleigh was a great yardstick as to the team’s progress. “Burleigh was a great challenge for the girls and they are a very good side,’’ she said.
“Overall it was a massive team effort and a super exciting start to the season for the girls.’’
Maroochy Roos v Victoria Point
Victoria Point coach Trevor Mayhew said his team’s intensity and tackling helped up “and I thought some of our field kicking was exceptional given the wet and slippery conditions early on’’.
But he would continue to work on the squad’s communication “which is the biggest issue.’’
Roos coach Aaron Yates said his side lost the match because they were out muscled for three quarters of the game.
“We played better in the last quarter but missed a few opportunities in front of goals.’’
Wilston Grange Gorillas v Broadbeach Cats
Cats coach James Dofter said the victory was set up by the best team performance of the year, with the side finally starting to connect. “The backline was outstanding and set up really well. The midfield also started connecting,’’ he said.
Gorillas coach Jamie Sceney said his side started the game well and matched the Cats in the physical contests. “Unfortunately they just had a little bit more class and efficiency inside the forward 50 for the next three quarters, but our girls never gave up the fight.’’
Sandgate Hawks v Southport Sharks
Hawks coach Shane Watterson was relieved to get away with another close win. “It was a tight, gritty win with the game played in the right spirit,’’ he praised.
Southport coach Marcus Gaszik said the side showed a big improvement. “We used the ball really well with both hand and foot,’’ he said.
“If we were a little more composed in front of goal the result may have gone the other way.’’
Yeronga Devils v Sherwood Magpies
Sherwood coach Chris Bloor said he liked the way his side responded when Yeronga came at them hard. He said the Magpies hung tough, fended them off, and kept going forward.
“The game was in the balance, but we hung in there and kicked on.’’
Yeronga coach Jessie Batlus said she enjoyed the way his girls embraced the challenge, saying there was no shame being beaten by a strong opposition. “Our goal was to run out the game well.’’
“We kept to our long term approach and pushed out rotations for all players to get on the field,’’ she said.
Batlus said that experience will benefit the squad in the weeks ahead.
Coorparoo Roos v Wests Juniors
Wests coach Mark McCabe said it was a “good, even four quarter effort’’. “The girls really worked the rotation themselves, were independent and shared the load around.’’
He said it was important the side maintained intensity throughout the game and its attack on the footy.
Roos coach Scott Harrison said he expected Wests Juniors to play down the corridor and the plan was to try and shut that option off with width. “Across the game Coorparoo match Wests intensity but could not get forward and get the rewards they deserved with the amount of inside 50 entries.’’
He said as a team the group was proud of their effort and how they matched up compared to seven days earlier. “We were missing two main forwards this week so improvements to our forward structure is something we will look at during training this week.’’
Meanwhile, in Div 2 action, it was rerfect conditions for football on Sunday at Kedron when
Mt Gravatt/Jindalee scored 13-13-91 to beat Kedron/Kenmore 1-2-8.
It was a tight first first quarter with Kedron/Kenmore locking the ball in their forward line for the majority of the term.
The second quarter saw the Mags moved the ball forward and kicked numerous points before kicking their second goal.
From there the game was controlled by the Mags.
When Kedron/Kenmore got the ball forward the Mags backs repelled their efforts and then we would move the ball with teamwork to our forward line.
Some match highlights where when Bella Strawbridge took a one handed mark and Sophie Hosack kicked her first goal ever after playing as a fullback most of her career.
The most pleasing part was watching Mt Gravatt and Jindalee become one, it’s not a merged team anymore we are the Mags.

The Div 2 under 17 Morningside girls got their first win for the season with a hard fought 6.8.44 to 1.0.6 victory over Everton Wolves.
Morningside got the jump on their opponent in the first half, playing the attacking brand of footy asked of them.
Everton threw everything at them in the third quarter, where almost all the play was in their forward territory, but solid defence from the Panthers held them at bay.
“In a new half back role, Stella Edgar was best on ground for the Panthers,’’ said Panthers coach Alan McGrath.

Captain Eden Taylor had another strong game in the ruck, and forwards Mabel Dart and Poppy Priestley were dangerous all game.
