QAFL colts: Cahill bags 8; our Players of Round 5

QAFL colts latest: Palm Beach Currumbin captain Luke Cahill bags eight goals, the Roos Will Jones five while the Magpies have nested in the top four. Plus our Players of the Round here.

Palm Beach Currumbin captain Luke Cahill bagged eight goals and William Jones five for Maroochydore as the Coast teams pressed the go button in the QAFL colts.

Both PBC and the Roos hit the century mark in their matches, while Wilston Grange and Broadbeach remained the pacesetters on 16 points.

Sherwood Magpies have nested in the top four after its third win of the season in a derby against Morningside.

So how did round 5 unfold, and who were our Super players of the round?

PLAYERS OF THE ROUND

Jayden Banks (Maroochydore)

The centre half forward contested well with great overhead marking. He presented all day and brought his teammates into the game.

Jack Ellen (Maroochydore)

Ellen worked all day and created plenty of chances for teammates with his strong run, pressure and midfield clearances.

Kobi Cook: (Maroochydore)

Cook played fullback and dominated in the air and positioned himself throughout the day for the team’s transition out from the backline into the forward line.

Luke Cahill (PBC)

Cahill kicked eight goals and was a fabulous target for his side, finishing his opportunities in style.

Hugh Munro and Beau Lester (PBC)

The PBC forwards, including Cahill, can thank midfielders Munro and Lester for their efforts, with Munro tough all day and Lester offering plenty of forward entries.

Luca Laverde (PBC)

It was all happening up forward for Cahill, but down back Laverde impressed with his communication.

Jack Thompson (Wilston Grange)

Midfielder Thomson was best on ground in his team’s win. He dominated the clearances and was hard around the ground.

Duncan McCabe (Wilston Grange)

Playing midfield-forward, McCabe was a clear silver medallist behind Thompson. He linked in well with Thompson and both dominated.

Ralph Geesu, Sam Phillips and Aidan Palfrey (Redland-Victoria Point)

Redland took it to the Roos early but could not sustain the rage, although backmen Phillips and Palfrey toiled hard to spoil their rivals, while Geesu shone in the midfield.

Matt Robson (Morningside)

Robson was fantastic for the Panthers until he suffered a knock and came from the field.

Cooper and Harry Gwynne, Reef Webb (Broadbeach)

Harry Gwynne was mighty for the winners, including in the ruck and his brother Cooper was not far behind. Throw Webb into the mix and it was a triple treat for the Cats who made a statement with their performance.

Will Cockle and Monty Dorey (Morningside)

Cockle was great up forward while Dorey really impressed in the ruck.

Jake Cockerell (Sherwood)

He locked down his opponent and rebounded the ball all game.

Angus Parnell (Sherwood)

He was damaging around the stoppages and up forward

Will Munro (Sherwood)

Will was silky off the half back and rebounded and used the ball well.

Zack Bidgood (Sherwood)

He was the dominant forward on the day, taking marks and winning the clean clearance.

Joel O’Brien (Sherwood)

Joel was terrific with his clean play around the stoppages which allowed Sherwood to attack out of the contest. He won clean ball.

Nico Abrahams, Lucas Snowball and Laughlin Morrisey (Surfers Paradise)

Surfers was well beaten by the big Cat on Sunday, “but we did have some players who realy cracked in and kept trying all day,’’ according to coach Alistair Mitchell.

“Nico, Lucas and Laughlin all had a red hot crack.’’

Tristyn Dawson, Connory McRae and Billy Bowes (Noosa)

The boys spearheaded the Noosa repelling of their rivals, with the backline doing its best under a lot of pressure. Dawson left foot and skills off the half back line was noted, while McRae competed all day and consistently won his one on ones. Bowes swung from place to place, taking pack marks at both ends of the ground and also competed well in the ruck.

Maddyx Taborsky (Aspley):

He played wing and kept his width and gave Aspley an outlet.

Aykan Sertli: The youngster gave Aspley plenty of drive when he moved into the midfield.

Jake Howson and Jalen Proud (Aspley)

Howson up forward kept hitting at the ball while defender Proud played tight, but also created run off half back.

Heath Seadon and Will Ryan (Mt Gravatt)

Seadon played well restarting from the middle to the forwards and giving his side a target while Ryan, a basketball convert, is starting to show what he can do in the ruck and around the ground.

THE MATCHES

Noosa 2.6-18 v Aspley 16-13-109 saw Bryce Slattery kick four and Jake Howson three as Aspley returned to the winners list.

Hornets coach Brett Atkins observed: “There was plenty of improvement as we played to our structure really well. We lowered our eyes and hit up targets really well.’’

Noosa coach Jed Costigan did not see a lot of improvement this week as the side struggles for numbers. But he said that did not stop the group from trying hard, lead by Connory McRae, Tristyn Dawson and Billy Bowes. “Unfortunately our skills let us down heading into the forward line.’’

Wilston Grange pulled away from Mt Gravatt after a very, very competitive first two quarters, winning 12.8-80 to Mt Gravatt 2.2-14. The goals were shared around, but Jack Fewster bagged three.

Wilston Grange coach Darren Fazldeen added: “The boys played well again. It took some time to get momentum but we finished the game well, kicking goal goals in the last quarter.’’

Mt Gravatt coach David Greenaway offered: “Our first halves are good. We are competitive around the ground. But more focus will be on coming out after halftime and bringing intensity and pressure.’’

Morningside hosted Sherwood, but it was the Magpies were left winners 10-6-66 to 5-5-35. Sherwood set up the win with a 4-1 third quarter when they kept Morningside scoreless. The three Ps, Paraskevopoulos, Preston and Parnell all grabbed two goals each.

Sherwood coach Ben Janeke-Cain added: “We were able to make some key adjustments that allowed us to kick away in the second half effort. It was good to bounce back after last week and continue to learn and get better each week.’’

Morningside coach Ross Anderson said: “We matched it with Sherwood in the first half, but fell off the pace in the third term.”

Maroochydore hit the hundred against Redland Victoria Point, kicking straight to win 16.5-101 to 1.4-10, with William Jones on song with five goals.

Roos coach Jason McDonald said: “The work rate today from the group stood up to the early pressure from Redland.’’

Sharks coach Brian Zutt said: “It has been a tough two weeks in a row for the boys. We really pressured Maroochydore early but couldn’t contain their run.’’

Labrador v Palm Beach Currumbin also had a big win, 16-9-105 against Labrador 2-1-13.

PBC coach Glen Clark said: “It was a good win and we are continuing to grow our game plan. Labrador gave us a great contest early but our strength around the contest was the difference which gave the side’s runners first use.

Labrador coach Rob Yoannidis was away for work and not at the match

Today on the Coast, Broadbeach amassed 13-7-85 to beat Surfers Paradise 4.4-28.

Liam Thom kicked four, but the other nine goals were shared around between nine players, including under 17 Div 1 player Maddox Iverach.

Broadbeach coach Lewis Chiodo said the match was a great challenge to his side and he was pleased with the way they responded.

“The group worked cohesively and for each other,’’ the coach praised.

Surfers coach Alistair Mitchell said Broadbeach showed his group what was needed to win.

“We just weren’t on our game today and it showed on the scoreboard,’’ he said.
