Replay: Australian Youth Championships - Mermaids Pink v St Rita's (U16 Girls)

U16 girls: UQ Barras (purple) 5 v Canberra/Melville 9

The UQWPC Barras (purple) versus Canberra Melville was a battle royale in the girls 16s.

Both No.5s, Emma Moore (Barras) and Jessica Butler (Canberra Melville) traded first quarter goals.

There were several outstanding saves by Canberra keeper Remi MacDougal, including a penalty shot, but by halftime Barras had opened a small gap, 4-2, between the teams.

Nakarra-lyn Eastment scored a penalty goal and Grace Artlley a goal to complement Moore’s second goal after Moore had extended her long left arm and pushed the ball into the back of the net.

But straight after halftime Canberra went bang-bang, with Caitlin Bauer and Bridget Cranley scoring and it was 4-all — and anyone’s match.

Replay: Water Polo Queensland State Titles - Mermaids (Pink) v St Ritas’ College (U16 Girls)

U16 girls: Mermaids 13 v St Rita’s 4

Mermaids’ Sienna Owen was on fire as her team eclipsed old foe St Rita’s College 13-4 in the 16 years girls competition.

Whether it was taking penalty shots or delicate lob goals, Owen was here, there and everywhere in her team’s victory.

Owen, with four goals in the first quarter, one in the second and another three in the third quarter, blended beautifully into this Mermaids machine and the 2022 Queensland state champions will take some beating again.

Despite the scoreline, St Rita’s provided stiff opposition and never gave in.

The side were tenacious in restricting Mermaids to 1-all in the fourth quarter and had plenty of small wins, including when keeper Emma Williams brilliantly saved a goal.

Remarkably the two teams were playing each other for the fourth time in five days after they twice met during the pool rounds of the state titles — and then again in the grand final won by Mermaids.

Olivia Muir was again an imposing force for Mermaids while Isabelle McGuire and Pia Hatzipetrou scored nice goals.

Replay: Australian Youth Championships - Sunshine Coast v Melbourne Collegians (U16 Boys)

U16 boys: Sunshine Coast 14 v Melbourne Collegians 13

The Sunshine Coast’s Leo Gallagher proved to be a big match player with a booming last quarter performance that delivered his side a dramatic victory over Melbourne Collegians.

In the match of the day so far, Gallagher produced three late goals - including a powerful long range effort from driver - as the Coast hit the winners post late in the piece.

The teams were neck and neck throughout, with Gallagher and Harry Colley both delivering sensational goal scoring deeds to cart their side just ahead of their rivals. Gallagher ended up with five goals for his troubles and Colley three.

What a game it was as the Sunny Coast inched ahead with a 5-4, fourth quarter effort.

The scores swayed to and fro throughout, with Pavie Macic and Daniel Magasanik focal points in attack, scoring 10 goals between them.

Replay: Australian Youth Championships - All Hallows v River City (U14 Girls)

U14 girls: All Hallows 6 v River City 5

All Hallows’ School took three quarters to switch on before coming back to pip River City 6-5 in a fantastic 14 years match.

A double by Tessa Gibbons and a goal to Georgia Shannon saw them come over the top of River City with a 3-nil fourth quarter performance.

River City goalie Beate Boshoff was almost a hero, saving a penalty goal in the last minute to deny All Hallows further advancing their advantage.

All Hallows had scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to get within 5-4 of their rivals, and then it was 5-all and anyone’s match.

Earlier, River City eyed off the biggest lead of the encounter - 5-2 - after Lola Murphy had scored, but All Hallows’ struck back courtesy of Tessa Gibbons, making it a two-point clash.

During the second quarter a penalty goal by River City’s Florence Hill had elevated her side to 4-2 at halftime after Florence had earlier scored two goals.

Twice in the second half goalposts were extra defenders for River City as shots by All Hallows’ pair Elizabeth Douglas and Gibbons hit the woodwork.

Two tremendous saves by the respective goalkeepers, Ainsley Hubbard (All Hallows) and Boshoff, were among the first half highlights.

Replay: Australian Youth Championships – Hunter Hurricanes v UQWPC Barras White (U14 Girls)

U14 girls: Hunter Hurricanes 6 v UQ Barras 5

The Hunter Hurricanes won a thriller over UQ Barras after a dramatic finish.

A goal by Barras’ Jessica Bright was waved away in the last quarter, adding to the theatre of the clash.

Last-quarter goals by Anna Vogt and Kendra Burdack raised the Hurricanes marginally above their rivals.

Barras’ Kayla Deegan also swam into an open goal to score from centre forward, setting up a grandstand finish.

There was not a struck match between the teams and a draw would probably have been a fair reflection, so close was the contest.

Barras inched ahead 3-1 in the first quarter, with a double by Lily Emu giving her side a nice start.

But Hunter kept Barras scoreless in the second quarter, while adding Isabella Irvine’s goal, and the teams went toe-to-toe until the final whistle.

Replay: Australian Youth Championships – Richmond/DVE v Adelaide Jets (U14 Boys)

U14 boys: RichmondDVE 7 Adelaide Jets 5

Magnificent goalkeeping was one of the highlights of another thriller, this time between Richmond/DVE and Adelaide Jets.

Richmond won in a clash which could have gone either way.

On three occasions in the third quarter, Richmond/DVE goalie Gus Kelly produced grand saves, while Jets’ goalie Miles Fotheringham also repelled his rivals.

Three-all at halftime became 5-4 and 6-4 to Richmond, before Jets’ Charlie Smart closed the gap to 6-5.

But Richmond’s Gus Callaghan drove home his team’s seventh goal which was just enough to get the job done.

There was a near thing for Richmond when Lewis Pinyon produced a thunderbolt from centre back, but it cannoned into the post.

Replay: Australian Youth Championships – Carina League Warriors v Mantas Black (U14 Boys)

U14 boys: Mantras 11 v Carina Leagues Warriors 11

A goal seconds from full-time by Carina League Warriors’ Elliot Barbaro snared an 11-all draw with Mantras in a cracking clash.

Barbaro delivered the goal from point blank range at centre half forward to share the points.

Warriors had come from two goals down in the final quarter to draw, with a sensational effort from halfway by Levi Clapper giving his team a sniff late in the contest.

From the right wing he launched his angled shot which remarkably found the goals, making it 11-10 to set up a chance for his team to snare a draw.

After it was locked 7-all at halftime, Mantras took a 9-8 lead into the last quarter after a clever left-handed lob shot by the driving Oliver Jacobs, and a powerful finish by Mitchell Lazarus from centre forward.

Lazarus then converted a penalty three minutes from full-time to give his team a 10-8 break, but it was still anyone’s match when Warriors’ James Thaivarayan converted with his own penalty.

Lazarus scored again for Mantras, but then came the last two goals of the match from Clapper and Barbaro.

In Pool No.2, the Melbourne Collegians proved too strong, beating SNB Breakers 19-3.

Melbourne established a 9-1 lead and despite a resolute Breakers regrouping, the damage had been done after an early hat trick to Nicholas Mordes and doubles to Patrick Healy and Pavis Macic. Momentum then stayed with Breakers.

Replay: Australian Youth Championships – Sydney University Cubs v UQWPC Barras White (U14 Boys)

U14 boys – Sydney University Cubs 27 v QUWPC Barras (white) 2

The Sydney University Cubs flexed their muscles from the outset with a 25-goal win.

Charlie Fannin scored five of the goals, while Sean Ford,Nathaniel Santos, Harrison Nixon, Luke Trbojevic, Luke McLaughlin, Hudson Myliotis and Diesel Williams all scored three each.

For the young Barras, it was great to see Xavier Carracedo get on the score sheet, twice beating the goalie.

In pool No.2 next door, Sunshine Coast’s Lep Gallagher (five goals) had the pleasure of scoring the opening goal of the championship to kickstart his team’s campaign, with the Coast crew beating UNSW Wests 13-8 in the boys U16 competition.

Gallagher actually found the back of the goals three times in the first quarter as the Coast got out to a 4-1 lead before Wests closed the gap.
