GOLD MEDAL REPLAYS

Sydney Uni Blue v Mantas (14 boys gold gold medal)

Replay: Sydney Uni Blue v Mantas (14 boys gold gold medal) - 2025 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships Week 1 Day 5

A grand final performance two years in the making has driven Sydney University to a dramatic gold medal at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

In one of the games of the tournament, the Lions came from behind to defeat Mantas 8-7 in the U14 boys gold decider with an Edison Whalan missile from long range winning the game in the final minute.

Sydney Uni coach Eric Brown said the victory was the perfect culmination of a long journey for the team that began with a heartbreaking defeat in the 2023 U12 grand final against the same opposition.

“Two years ago we played Mantas in the grand final and lost in a penalty shootout, so we’ve been working on this for two years,” Brown said.

“The boys have been working their guts out so hard for two years. It’s so rewarding.”

Mantas struck first early and shot out to a two-goal lead, only to be pegged back by the Lions by the first break.

Marcus Pavanello then put the Queensland club back in front while keeper Nathaniel Kolomeitz made some key stops, but again Sydney Uni struck a response just before the half through Phoenix Brown to make it 3-3.

The teams were again locked on 4-4 at the last break before a dramatic finish.

With just 24 seconds left on the clock Whalan – the son of Olympians Tom and Elka Whalan – unleashed from 8m out and found the back of the net.

Brown said while it wasn’t the Lions’ best game, they showed great resilience to get the job done.

“They had faith in each other ... as a team they’ve been amazing all week.”

Well done to the Mantas too, what tough competition. It was a really close game, they showed up, played their hardest and it really could have gone either way.”

Brown was terrific for Sydney Uni with four goals while Whalan finished with two. For Mantas, Angus Kolomeitz scored a late pair which almost got his side over the line

It was the third-straight year the Lions have claimed the U14 boys gold crown.

AHS v Sydney Uni Blue (14 girls gold gold medal)

In the U14 girls gold medal match, All Hallows’ School showed its class in an impressive display to defeat Sydney Uni 11-6.

AHS coach Emma Jackson said the gold medal was a fitting reward for the team’s performances across the week.”

They’ve played really well this week, stuck together as a team, played our gameplan and everyone’s contributed really well,” Jackson said.

“I think they really believed in themselves. I couldn’t ask for more from them really.”

AHS shot out of the blocks with a 4-1 lead at quarter time and held their nerve to hold the Lions at bay and shut down any scoring runs.

Five time champions Sydney Uni Blue have sensationally crashed out of the 2025 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships after a devastating loss in the U18 boys gold semi-final on Thursday.

Facing off against UQ Barras, Uni Blue were hit with a knockout blow early and never looked like recovering.

The 15-7 win by Barras was kick started by a 4-0 first-quarter performance with that lead extending to 6-0 midway through the second term.

Uni Blue finally registered their first goal through back-to-back goals from Orlando Mener with just under three and a half minutes to go in the second before Barras immediately responded.

The lead sat at 9-3 at halftime with Patrick Duggan’s goal with just 1.4 second remaining in the second-quarter snuffing out any kind of momentum Uni Blue had gathered minutes prior.

The second-half was much of the same with Uni Blue continuing to press but unable to make any real indent on the 4-0 lead they gave up in the first-quarter.

UQ Barras will now face UNSW Wests in the grand final after they defeated UTS Balmain Tigers 14-9 in the final game on Thursday.

In other major results on Thursday, Polo Bears trounced Melville Marlins 13-1 and UTS Balmain Tigers defeated Sydney Uni Blue 14-7 to both advance through to the U18 girls gold grand final.

The top two best-performing teams – UQ Barras and Sydney Uni Blue – will face off in a highly anticipated U18 boys gold semi-final at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships in Perth on Thursday.

Five-time champion Uni Blue kept its title defence aspirations alive with victory against the UWA Bears, while the Barras overcame the Polo Bears in Wednesday’s semi-finals.

UTS Balmain, the only other undefeated outfit in that age group at the nationals, will take on UNSW Wests in the second semi.

In a seesawing contest, a courageous shot from Uni Blue’s Ryan Ford from an acute angle pushed its quarter-final lead out to two goals with seconds remaining for the Pool C heavyweights.

Goalkeeper Harrison Ballard then iced the contest with the final throw of the game after the Bears missed at the other end, resulting in a 14-11 victory.

But the contest was much closer than that, with little separating both sides throughout as they traded blows.

Besides the telling strike which sealed it for the powerhouse, Ford was the leading scorer with three other goals. Marcus Cupac and Hamish Ellison finished with two apiece and Orlando Mina fired home two crucial penalty strikes.

For the vanquished, Jake Taboni scored four goals and Sam Regan found the back of the net three times.

It took UNSW Wests until the final few minutes before they pulled clear of the SNB Breakers to tie up their spot in the semi-finals.

Gallant in defeat, the Breakers suffered in the final quarter on the back of some ill-disciplined play before going down 13-10.

They had led 4-2 early in the entertaining contest before Wests levelled up proceedings, which remained close until late in the final quarter.

Pool A table leader UQ Barras were too strong for the Polo Bears in their quarter-final with 14-10 victory.

Sean Bright led the way with five goals and Patrick Duggan finished with four

Pool B leader UTS Balmain Tigers claimed a 9-8 victory against the Hunter Hurricanes in their defensive thriller to progress to the final four.

Three pools will be exclusively live streamed here on KommunityTV on day three of the tournament in Perth.

And the U18 boys gold battles will be the ones to watch.

Reigning champions Sydney University will take on UWA Bears, UQ Barras face Polo Bears, UTS Balmain Tigers take on Hunter Hurricanes and SNB Breakers clash with UNSW Wests in the final four battles.

Wednesday’s live stream coverage will also feature U14 boys and girls plus U18 girls matches across three pools at Perth HPC.

A trio of challengers have emerged for the U18 boys gold crown at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

After day two action on Tuesday, SNB Breakers, UQ Barras and UTS Balmain Tigers have all streaked out to 3-0 starts to the tournament in Perth.

The only downside however, five-time reigning champions Sydney University have also begun the championships in undefeated fashion. All four sides sit top of their respective groups.

KommunityTV live streamed every match from three pools at Perth HBC on Tuesday as part of a huge 10-days of water polo.

SNB Breakers recorded one of the most impressive wins of day two as they dismantled UQ Tugun 19-2.

Jett Semmens led the way with four goals for the Breakers while Kosta Tsiaousis nabbed three and Rune Kaalund, Charlie Lewcock, Joshua Wilson and Thomas Ellison all grabbed doubles.

It wasn’t so straightforward for 2024 winners Sydney Uni as they were well pushed by the Melville Sharks in a 13-10 victory.

Hamish Ellison and Orlando Mina both scored four for the Lions.

In U18 girls green action, Water Polo SA recorded one of the results of the day as they won their first match of the tournament.

Chelsea Frost starred for SA as they proved too strong for Geraldton in a 13-1 triumph.

Come back here on Wednesday to watch the day three action.

KommunityTV will exclusively live stream more than 200 matches across three pools at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

The fortnight is split into two five-day age tournaments, with the U14 and U18 teams competing from April 14-18 before the U12 and U16 teams take to the pool from April 20-24.
