1/ St Kevin’s win men’s and women’s premier flags
St Kevin’s became the first club in VAFA history to win the premier double in the same season.
The women’s side defeated Kew by 23 points to win back-to-back flags.
The men’s team starred on grand final day to take home the title by 22 points over Old Brighton. It also marked their third flag in four seasons.
Tom Jok was named best afield in the men’s grand final and Teah Stepan was awarded best on ground in the women’s decider.
2/ Oakleigh and De La Salle in the Masters grand final
This was nothing short of an enthralling contest.
Both sides put it all on the line, and some could still be recovering months later. The game had it all, a long bomb from outside 50, big bumps (some accidental), open play end-to-end footy. It was a remarkable sight to behold as the players clicked into gear at Elsternwick Park.
Oakleigh, who were the underdogs, ended up winning the premiership by three points.
3/ Kew defeating St Kevin’s in the women’s qualifying final
Every VAFA follower knew this was St Kevin’s premiership to lose. They were the clear standout all season, losing just one game.
But when Kew defeated the Saints by eight points in the qualifying final to go straight through to the grand final, it injected life into the title race.
All of a sudden, the Saints were a chance of not playing in a grand final as they began preparations for a big preliminary final with Caulfield.
It certainly was a great win for Kew which gave them belief that they could match it with the best in VAFA women’s football.
4/ Old Brighton defeat Collegians to make it to second men’s premier grand final
Former AFL footballer Greg Hutchinson steered his Old Brighton troops to the decider in what turned out to be his last season as coach of the club.
It was a brilliant occasion for the club who were no certainties of even making the finals a few weeks before the completion of the regular season.
The grand final appearance came off the back of a thrilling 26-point win over Collegians in the preliminary final. It was a great run in the finals for Old Brighton.
5/ Old Xaverians win the U19 premiership
Clearly the best all season, Old Xavs delivered when it mattered most.
Led by best on field Will Bowen, Xavs steamrolled Old Brighton to win the flag by 20 points in front of a healthy crowd.
It was a wet and slippery encounter, but one which suited Xavs who lifted to win their fourth U19 premiership in six seasons.
Their strong recent record at U19 level certainly gives the club plenty of excitement going forward.
