Replay: VAFA - De La Salle v Oakleigh (Masters grand final)

Oakleigh came from behind to win the inaugural VAFA Masters premiership by three points in a thriller at Elsternwick Park.

De La Salle led by 13 points at quarter time before Oakleigh charged back to level scores at halftime.

Cameron Kirkup fired to start the second half, kicking two goals to give his side the first lead of the game.

Ryan Tily kicked the goal of day with a long bomb from almost 60 metres out.

Chris Hogan was awarded best on ground in Oakleigh’s 6.4 (40) to 6.7 (43) win.

For De La Salle, Cory Wilson was dominant scoring three goals while Thomas Maloney caught eyeballs with his clutch goal on the run.

PREVIEW: Oakleigh planning big shock for minor premiers

Minor premiers De La Salle have had the wood on Oakleigh in the Masters this season but the Krushers are set to give them a real shock when they bring in a bunch of unseen stars in for their grand final blockbuster.

Streamed exclusively on KommunityTV on Sunday at 2.30pm, the clash is set to provide a closer affair compared to their two home and away encounters which saw the Krushers go down by 17 and 46 points.

Captain-coach Andrew Murray said his side took lessons from the losses while also alerting to the fact they didn’t have a full strength team in.

“Like I have said to the boys, it was obviously a disappointing result, we got done in the first quarter with eight goals to none so we learnt a lot from the way they play the ground,” Murray said.

“To be honest they haven’t really seen any of our tricks yet, I guess, both times we played them, first time we were pretty undermanned and then the second time we were pretty undermanned.”

The Krushers were undefeated in their inaugural season last year in the Eastern Football League before making a move to the VAFA this campaign.

They lost two games this season. De La Salle lost one game to the Marcellin Bald Eagles who had a few ex-AFL stars in their side.

Murray, who helped start the Masters team at the Krushers last season, said it was pleasing to reconnect with players on the field who he won premierships with years ago.

“If we somehow manage to win on Sunday, if you said to a 20-year-old Andrew that when I was nearing 40, I would get to play in a premiership again with Christopher Hogan, Stephen Doherty, Shane Borland, Peter Brown, Peter Holden, real good mates of mine for 20-odd years, I would be pretty content without foresight.”

The Masters competition is the first of its kind for the VAFA this season with five teams making up the league who play on a fortnightly basis.

The over 35’s played eight matches each this season while the top two sides progressed to the Grand Final.

Cameron Kirkup will be a player to watch in this game having doubled the goal tally of teammate Ryan Tily (15) and De La Salle’s Cory Wilson (15) with 30 goals to his name for the season, the most of any player in the competition.

The action will begin at 2.30 on Sunday with live commentary, streaming and match replays available on KommunityTV.
