St Kevins have won back-to-back flags in the VAFA Premier Women’s competition after powering home in the final quarter to defeat Kew by 23 points at Elsternwick Park.

With scores tied at 16-16 at three-quarter time, St Kevins stormed home, booting three goals to nil in the final-quarter, led by Jessica Joyce, who kicked two.

Small forward Teah Stepan was awarded the best player on the ground while co-captain Sarah Cameron made an impact with two goals.

Eliza Straford found plenty of the ball alongside Tessa Boyd, who was lively in the forward line and kicked a goal.

Skipper Cameron complimented the amazing culture of her club.

“To the women, you are so special,” Cameron said.

“Every single person at this club is so special and incredible.

“The connection we have built over the years has been absolutely untouchable.

“Nothing compares, we truly are a family and this is how we show our love.”

Kew fought hard for a large chunk of the match and had an even proportion of the territory.

Dakota Villiva was influential in the Kew midfield alongside captain Lily Barr, who stood tall for her side in the face of hard contests.

Michaela Harding was also brave on several occasions where she won many hard balls.

Tara Donnan was busy up forward along with Amelia Dawborn, who both recorded a goal.

The win for St Kevins marks their second in a row after they defeated West Brunswick by eight points in 2019.

PREVIEW

Fresh from a dominant preliminary final victory, St Kevins take on Kew in the VAFA Premier Women’s Grand Final at Elsternwick Park on Sunday afternoon.

The blockbuster showdown will be livestreamed by KommunityTV from 2:30pm and is the fourth time the sides have faced off this season.

Kew have had the better of St Kevins in two of their three meetings this season.

Their last clash saw Kew topple the minor premiers by eight points in the qualifying final two weeks ago.

That loss seemed to have sparked St Kevins into life if their thumping 79-point victory over Caulfield last weekend is any indication.

St Kevins skipper Sarah Cameron led the way booting six goals in a best on ground performance and will be a player to watch.

Cameron is a clear leader as the competition’s leading goalkicker with 42. The next highest only has 22.

While aware of Cameron’s potential impact, Kew coach Jess Burger is backing her team to step up.

“We are looking for a 22 person performance ultimately, we don‘t have a Sarah Cameron who can probably put the team on her back and carry them along,” Burger said.

“We have got 22 role players and we rely on every single one of them to perform to get a result.”

Burger, who is also Collingwood’s head of women’s football, said her group took great confidence from their win in the qualifying final.

“The plan that we went in with and attitude I thought the group executed really well,” she said.

“The girls should take great confidence that their best footy will certainly challenge the best.”

Kew midfielders Dakota Villiva and captain Lily Barr will be players to look out for in the Kew lineup.

Both have featured in the team’s best players on more than 10 occasions this season.
