AFL teams: All the ins and outs for Round 11

Richmond will welcome back a host of stars but another key player has gone down with injury, while a former Blues captain has been dropped.

Carlton has sensationally dropped former captain Marc Murphy for its hitout with Sydney.

Murphy, who has played 293 games for the club, had 18 disposals, four clearances and kicked a goal in his side’s win over Hawthorn last week.

A move to the forward line has seen a decline in the two-time best-and-fairest’s output this season, averaging 16.2 disposals and 67.2 ranking points per game – his lowest ranking points return since his debut season in 2006.

Richmond has been dealt another injury blow with key defender David Astbury among seven changes for its clash with Adelaide after being ruled out with Achilles soreness.

Astbury was named in the initial squad of 26 on Thursday night for the moved Sunday afternoon contest at Giants Stadium, but was a notable exclusion on Friday night after the setback.

Carlton has dropped former captain Marc Murphy for its hitout with Sydney, bringing in Jack Martin and Levi Casboult, while the Swans have recalled Callum Sinclair, Kaiden Brand and Justin McInerney.

The Tigers lose Astbury, Tom Lynch (knee) and Patrick Naish to injury, but will be bolstered by the return of captain Trent Cotchin, Shai Bolton and Dion Prestia

Daniel Rioli has lost his spot after a quiet seven-disposal outing in his side’s loss to Brisbane, while midfielder Jack Ross has also been omitted.

Injuries to two of their key posts will give fringe talls Callum Coleman-Jones and Mabior Chol the opportunity to shine, with both coming off four-goal hauls in the VFL last week.

The inclusion is Coleman-Jones’s first AFL game since his debut in Dreamtime at the ‘G in 2019, while Chol has not featured at senior level since last year’s qualifying final.

Carlton has dropped former captain Marc Murphy for its hitout with Sydney, bringing in Jack Martin and Levi Casboult, while the Swans have recalled Callum Sinclair, Kaiden Brand and Justin McInerney.

Meanwhile veteran Hawks Shaun Burgoyne and Liam Shiels will have to prove their fitness in a Friday afternoon hit-out in order to face Gold Coast in Sydney on Saturday.

The AFL relocated the game from Darwin’s TIO Stadium to the SCG after this week’s COVID-19 outbreak in Melbourne plunged plans into chaos.

Hawthorn will sneak a session in at Lakeside Oval, located opposite the SCG, on Friday that will decide whether Burgoyne and Shiels play after they were named as inclusions on Thursday night.

Coach Alastair Clarkson was confident both players would be fit to play, but said there was “some chance” Burgoyne wouldn’t play in Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

“(Burgoyne) trained yesterday and gave us enough confidence that he’s overcome that ankle injury,” Clarkson said.

“We need to train again this afternoon … and there will still be a box to tick this afternoon that he’s able to get going again today, which will indicate he’ll be right to play tomorrow.

“But we’re yet to decide whether we use him as the medical sub or play (him) in the 22, but we’ll work that out this afternoon.”

Burgoyne was subbed out of the Hawks’ Round 6 match against Adelaide and has been sidelined for the past month, while Shiels (general soreness) sat out last week’s loss to Carlton.

“We’ve missed both those guys, but if they’re able to return, they’ll just give us a bit of stability around our structures,” Clarkson said.

“Shiels is a little bit the same as Burgoyne – he needs to train again this afternoon to see how he goes but we expect both those guys to play.”

Hawthorn dropped Ollie Hanrahan, while Kyle Hartigan (suspension) and Jaeger O’Meara (concussion) also go out after being involved in match review cases.

Clarkson said O’Meara was now “symptom free”, so the star midfielder should be clear to take on Sydney under lights at the SCG on June 11.

Hartigan will miss the next three games for his off-the-ball strike gone wrong on Carlton’s Sam Walsh, for which Clarkson said his defender was “pretty remorseful”.

Tiger guns back, Saints swing axe

Captain Trent Cotchin is one of seven inclusions for a Richmond team trying to keep its premiership three-peat dream alive.

The Tigers, who sit 5-5 and outside the top eight after 10 rounds, have regained injured stars Cotchin, Dion Prestia and Shai Bolton, and recalled Josh Caddy for his first game since Round 3.

Callum Coleman-Jones will play his second AFL game — and first since 2019 — as a replacement for injured forward Tom Lynch, while Daniel Rioli has also been named in the extended squad for Sunday's clash against Adelaide, which has been moved to Giants Stadium in Sydney.

Meanwhile, besieged St Kilda has swung the axe in reaction to last week’s horrific 111-point defeat to the Western Bulldogs.

Coach Brett Ratten and chief operating officer Simon Lethlean both promised there would be changes, with Jack Lonie and Jack Bytel losing their spots, on top of injuries to Hunter Clark (groin) and veteran off-season additions James Frawley (shoulder) and Shaun McKernan (toe).

Key defender Oscar Clavarino is in for his AFL debut – four years after being drafted – while Luke Dunstan, Nick Coffield and Mason Wood were recalled after good VFL form.

Last week’s medical substitute, Tom Highmore, is also set to play a full game against bottom side North Melbourne, which dropped speedster Charlie Lazzaro.

There is significant star power returning across the competition this weekend, including Bulldog Tim English and Demon Christian Salem for Friday night’s top-of-the-table showdown at Marvel Stadium.

Riley Garcia will play his first game and Patrick Lipinski is in to replace the injured Adam Treloar, while Melbourne dropped Neville Jetta.

Elsewhere, gun onballer Taylor Adams (knee) won’t play for Collingwood against Geelong at the MCG on Saturday, but Brayden Sier, Jack Madgen and debutant Trent Bianco are in.

Tyler Brown (shoulder), Josh Thomas (ankle) and Beau McCreery (calf) are also unavailable.

The Cats’ impressive 2020 draftee Max Holmes is the beneficiary of Mitch Duncan’s concussion.

Essendon and West Coast have both regained big-name players, with Jake Stringer returning for the Bombers and Elliot Yeo back for the Eagles after just one WAFL match.

Harry Jones is being managed for Essendon.

Hawthorn loses Jaeger O’Meara (concussion) and Kyle Hartigan (suspension) but welcomes back premiership players Shaun Burgoyne and Liam Shiels for the club’s SCG match-up with Gold Coast.

Sunday teams will be finalised on Friday evening, but Carlton could get back Jack Martin among four possible inclusions.

Hamish Hartlett has been dropped for Port Adelaide’s contest with Fremantle at Adelaide Oval, while the Dockers have lost key forward Matt Taberner (ankle).
