AFL mid-season draft nominees: See every player on the list and get the latest club news

Collingwood has met with a ready-made replacement who would fill a glaring hole, while Carlton is set to take a big man.

Jay Clark and Jack Watts take a look at the mid-season draft

Collingwood appears to have moved on from 30-year-old Mason Cox and has a SANFL goalkicker in its mid-season draft sights.

The Herald Sun understands the Magpies were in Adelaide meeting Norwood key forward Jackson Callow last week in a clear indication the 195cm target is in the mix for one of the two vacancies on the club’s list, which will be filled at Wednesday night’s rookie draft.

It can also be revealed that Carlton is set to draft 210cm ruckman Alexander Mirkov out of its own VFL program.

The 21-year-old from Old Ivanhoe has only played two VFL games, but is expected to be on the Blues’ list before next week’s battle against West Coast’s Nic Naitanui.

Should the Magpies select Callow — the SANFL’s No.1 ranked contested mark — he could make his AFL debut against Adelaide on Saturday, where he would make life easier for the likes of Jordan De Goey, Josh Thomas and Will Hoskin-Elliott.

The Magpies are ranked 17th for goals this year and had the embarrassing scoreline of 1.14 (20) 10 minutes into the final quarter against Geelong at the MCG on Saturday.

Coach Nathan Buckley conceded a key forward was the club’s most urgent need after last season, however with a bursting salary cap the Pies were limited to bringing in young talent through the draft.

Callow, 18, completed last pre-season at Hawthorn, where he kicked goals on Sam Frost in a scratch match, although the Hawks decided against putting him on their list.

But Callow exploded with 6.8 and 14 contested marks across two games earlier this month, when he registered 116 and 184 ranking points.

The Tasmanian was disappointing on Saturday although hopes his earlier blitz warrants an AFL lifeline.

Callow is understood to be high on the talent order at multiple clubs.

AFL clubs who poach state-league stars on Wednesday night must pay their clubs $10,000.

Norwood is expected to lose two key players, with ruckman Michael Knoll set to be taken by Gold Coast, where he will be parachuted straight into coach Stuart Dew’s best 22.

However the financial compensation does not satisfy VFL, SANFL and WAFL clubs, many of whom are bracing to have their premiership plans disrupted by losing their best players next week.

Curiously, Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said his club would only take one rookie on Wednesday, despite the widespread belief the Hawks would select Ned Moyle with the No.2 pick and then Box Hill’s Jai Newcombe on an inflated contract with a second pick.

Clarkson said their sole draftee would be ready to make an immediate AFL impact, which hints at inside midfielder Newcombe.

The Hawks have one list spot open due to Jon Patton’s retirement however James Sicily’s long-term knee injury means they could open a second spot.

But Clarkson said they would only take one player “unless we get a long-termer (injury) out of (Saturday‘s loss to Gold Coast), which I don’t think is the case”.

Clubs left fuming at Hawks’ mid-season draft plot

—Jay Clark

Sydney has asked the AFL to review its mid-season draft nomination rules as clubs fume about Hawthorn’s plot to secure emerging midfielder Jai Newcombe.

The Herald Sun has confirmed the Swans have contacted the AFL with concerns over the system which allows the previously unlisted Newcombe to put a price on his head.

The contract terms, which are believed to be north of $150,000 for his second season as part of a three-year deal, help protect his safe passage to Waverley with the Hawks’ second pick.

The higher terms could turn other clubs off who otherwise don’t have the room to accommodate Newcombe’s terms in their salary cap.

Newcombe, 20, has had an excellent season as a prime mover through the midfield for Mitchell’s Box Hill in the VFL, averaging 23 possessions a game.

The Swans have asked for a review to be completed before Wednesday’s draft in the belief all previously unlisted players should be paid in–line with first-year players in the national draft under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

There is a significant concern the player’s price terms interfere with the integrity of a draft.

But footy operations boss Steve Hocking and legal chief Andrew Dillon were yet to respond on Friday afternoon as they race to deal with the league’s COVID-19 fallout and the ongoing ramifications for the fixture.

The AFL’s head of list management, Josh Vanderloo, is set to depart his post after the mid-season draft to join Hawthorn to become the new general manager of operations and special projects.

The Swans’ complaint comes as clubs’ last-minute mid-season draft plans have been thrown into a spin by the new COVID-19 restrictions which have made medical and psych tests more difficult.

It is understood some clubs contacted the league to ask whether the league would push back Wednesday’s mid-season draft to the following week.

Clubs had previously organised a series of meetings this week and next week with recruiting targets, but they will now have to be done on zoom.

The Hawks are targeting a ruckman with their first selection, believed to be either Oakleigh’s Ned Moyle or Carlton VFL and Ivanhoe bolter Alexander Mirkov.

Hawthorn needs to replenish their ruck stocks to help find long-term replacements for veterans Ben McEvoy and Jon Ceglar and secure a co-pilot for Ned Reeves.

The Hawks have underperformed in the midfield this season with the club all but certain to consider any offers for Tom Mitchell and Chad Wingard, in particular, at season’s end.

The Swans are another club believed to be targeting a ruckman including 209cm Lachlan McAndrew who plays for the club’s reserves team.

McAndrew, 21, is a former rugby union convert who has impressed in his move to Australian rules.

Collingwood is considering former Adelaide and Richmond small forward Tyson Stengle to help rejuvenate the Magpies’ attacking setup.

The AFL mid-season draft is scheduled to take place from 7pm on Wednesday night.

Last-placed North Melbourne is expected to take Sandringham Dragons ruckman Jacob Edwards with the No. 1 pick.

HIGH FLYER ON PIES’ RADAR

—Jon Ralph

In 2019, Ash Johnson was playing division two football.

Now the high-flying forward is firming as a strong chance to follow in the footsteps of his half-brother, Crow Shane McAdam, by going from the remote WA town of Halls Creek to the AFL, via amateur ranks and SANFL club Sturt.

Johnson is understood to have had medicals at both Collingwood and Gold Coast ahead of next Wednesday’s mid-season rookie draft.

His cousin and fellow Halls Creek product Jy Farrar plays for the Suns.

Johnson, a 193cm prospect in his second SANFL campaign, has lined up six games for Sturt this season, booting 13 goals, including 3.2 against Central District last weekend.

Double Blues football manager Chris Trapp told The Advertiser the 23-year-old had improved markedly in 2021 and boasted AFL attributes.

“He’s our most likely to get an opportunity (next week),” Trapp said.

“He’s super athletic, excellent in the aerial contests and a nice, long, penetrating kick.”

Trapp said Johnson and McAdam, who lived together, were slightly different players.

“Ash is physically taller and plays taller,” he said.

“But they both take the high marks and have great goal sense.

“He’s a great kid as well so it’s good to see him having a good season.”

Like Farrar and McAdam, Johnson joined Sturt from Adelaide Footy League club Scotch Old Collegians, where he played in a division three premiership in 2018.

Sturt’s Ash Johnson is on the radar of Collingwood and Gold Coast.
Sturt’s Ash Johnson is on the radar of Collingwood and Gold Coast.

That year, Johnson kicked 52 goals from 18 games, before breaking his arm and dislocating his elbow in Scotch’s grand final triumph.

He became a Crows SANFL top-up player the next season and also booted 41 majors from 15 matches in division two at amateur level.

If he is rookie-listed on Wednesday, Johnson will become the sixth player from Halls Creek, located in the Kimberleys, more than 2500km from Adelaide, in the AFL.

McAdam, Farrar, Sam Petrevski-Seton (Carlton), Toby Bedford (Melbourne) and Irving Mosquito (Essendon) are the others.

Krstel Petrevski is on Melbourne’s AFLW list.

Trapp said Johnson had come a long way from home and worked very hard so landing on an AFL list would be a deserving reward.

The mid-season draft starts at 6pm next Wednesday.

TIGERS EYE ANOTHER MID-SEASON DRAFT BARGAIN

—Jon Ralph

Richmond has become a last-minute player in the mid-season draft as the final list of almost 600 nominations has been confirmed.

The Tigers have proven masters of the bargain buy, snapping up two-time premiership player Marlion Pickett halfway through the 2019 season.

They opened up a space on their list this week by placing Ivan Soldo (knee) on the long-term list.

In a blow to a number of hopefuls wanting to perform before Wednesday’s mid-season draft, the VFL has postponed all matches this weekend.

Tyson Stengle – linked to Collingwood – heads the list of recycled players seeking a fresh shot at the highest level, but another former Crow Riley Knight was a late nomination on Tuesday.

Former North Melbourne midfielder Ryan Bastinac, Nathan Freeman and Wylie Buzza are also seeking a fresh start in the AFL.

The AFL’s deadline for nominations closed at 5pm on Tuesday with Stengle among the list of players that includes exciting NAB League ruckmen Jacob Edwards and Ned Moyle.

Moyle and Edwards are set to be chosen with only nine total NAB League games between them after their 2020 seasons were ruined by Covid.

Sandringham Dragon Edwards is expected to head to North Melbourne with the first pick in the virtual draft as a 202cm ruckman, while Oakleigh Chargers ruckman Moyle also has suitors including Hawthorn, Collingwood and Gold Coast.

Moyle has played VFL football with Collingwood in recent weeks in the NAB League hiatus.

Essendon has also been linked to Eastern Ranges small forward Corey Preston, who played last weekend with the Footscray VFL side.

Stengle’s career looked all but over when he was sacked on March 17 by Adelaide for a series of blunders including a drink-driving incident and being caught by police with cocaine.

But he is seen as the best small forward available in the draft after a series of strong performances for Woodville West-Torrens.

Collingwood has the third overall pick but could fall to second or rise to fourth, with Stengle the perfect fit for their current needs.

Norwood 18-year-old Jackson Callow thrust his name forward as a mid-season contender by kicking 3.7 in the SANFL against Adelaide’s reserves side on Saturday, taking seven contested marks.

Other contenders include Wylie Buzza, Patrick McCartin, Ben Crocker and Patrick McCartin.

AFL clubs have until the close of business next Tuesday to decide upon whether they clear list spots to take a selection.

It means Richmond will have to make a decision on whether to place ruckman Ivan Soldo on the long-term injury list to secure a pick.

Brisbane can do likewise with Cam Rayner (ACL), with football boss Danny Daly telling the Herald Sun the Lions were likely to take a selection.

Greater Western Sydney has a selection but is still tossing up whether to invest $50,000 into a player it will sign for six months.

The AFL did not conduct a mid-season draft for Covid reasons but in 2019 it attracted a diverse range of players including that year’s premiership hero Marlion Pickett.

Will Snelling was chosen by Essendon only after Sydney shocked the Dons by taking their target three picks before them with the No. 4 pick.

Snelling was a tackling dynamo in the SANFL but continues to improve and against North Melbourne on Sunday was awarded coaches votes for his 25-possession, eight score involvement display.

Of the 13 players taken in the 2019 mid-season draft Ryan Gardner (pick 6), Snelling (pick 7), Marlion Pickett (pick 13) and John Noble (pick 14) are all first-choice members of their current sides.
