Public Transport Victoria will canvas public opinion for ideas to name the city’s five new railway stations being built for the Metro project.
The stations — with the working titles Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain — could be named after famous people or favourite landmarks.
Already, readers polled by the Herald Sun favour Arden, University, La Trobe, Federation and Domain as names, although many others have suggested some light-hearted and mischievous alternatives. View our comments on this article and on our Facebook post to see more.
Melbourne University vice-chancellor Professor Glyn Davis already wants Parkville to be renamed University. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle threw the names of Hoddle, Latrobe and Library into the mix.

DEPT OF INTERNET: BLAND NEW NAMES FOR STATIONS
Other names could be Federation, Cathedral and Shrine.
Popular Victorians could also get a guernsey. CBD North could be christened Barassi — an appropriate honour for a station on the Melbourne-Carlton border to salute the Demons footy legend who coached the Blues.
Footy connections could also decide a title for Arden station, a drop punt from North Melbourne’s ground.
Kangaroos great Glenn Archer could be in the mix as could the Shinboner spirit. Professor Davis said the University of Melbourne was one of the engine rooms of the inner-north economy.
“The presence of a University station — literally speaking, on Grattan St and as represented on the Metro rail map — would contribute significantly to Melbourne’s identity, tourism and civic pride as a city of education, innovation and knowledge,’’ he said.
Cr Doyle also backed the University brand, and said CBD North could be named Library.
“Part of me says Selwood for CBD North and Dangerfield for CBD South,’’ the Geelong fan said, “but in reality perhaps Latrobe and Hoddle would be more appropriate.”
Any new name would have to comply with state government naming guidelines.
PTV said no decision had been made if CBD North and CBD South would be renamed.
Construction on the $10 billion cross-city rail tunnel is expected to start next year with completion by 2026.
