Whittlesea councillor Ricky Kirkham resigns due to ongoing council-wide problems

The former mayor of embattled Whittlesea Council Ricky Kirkham has resigned from his role as councillor, saying he could not continue in good conscience.

Whittlesea councillor Ricky Kirkham has resigned, claiming he can no longer continue in the role in good conscience.

In a statement issued in his Facebook page the former mayor said current circumstances at the embattled council made it “impossible to discharge (his) obligations to hold council accountable”.

Cr Kirkham goes on to say he had r epeatedly raised concerns about the council’s failure to manage major contracts.

Multiple sources told the Herald Sun Cr Kirkham will resign after tonight’s council meeting.

Controversy and scandal has overshadowed Whittlesea council since councillors voted to terminate the contract of former police boss Simon Overland as the council’s ceo.

The state government since appointed an independent monitor to oversee issues and decision at the council, with a 3-month report due in March.

The Herald Sun understands the Victorian Electoral Commission will undertake a process to fill the vacancy “shortly”.
