A massive suspected cockfighting ring has been busted in Melbourne’s northwest.
Almost 200 birds were seized during a raid executing a warrant on a Malmsbury property on Wednesday, with 75 roosters allegedly groomed for cockfighting and another 119 chicks, mature hens and young roosters removed.
No charges have been laid.
The RSPCA has since revealed the owner is already banned from owning poultry for 10 years as a result of a prior prosecution.
The existing ban isn’t due to expire until November 2022.
During the raid cockfighting implements were also discovered and removed from the property.
“The successful removal of the birds … resulted in a step forward for animal welfare in Victoria,” RSPCA Victoria Inspectorate Team Leader, Karen Collier said.
“While all those involved in this investigation were pleased with the outcome, it is a shocking reality that cockfighting, a barbaric activity, continues to operate in Victoria.”

Macedon Ranges Council assets and operations director Shane Walden said the council had a zero tolerance approach toward animal fighting.
“Cockfighting is an abhorrent and cruel activity leading to severe suffering of the roosters involved,” he said.
“Council is continuing investigations into conditions and structures at the property.”
Cockfighting is illegal in Australia and it is also illegal to possess any equipment designed for cock fighting.
