A school community is mourning the loss of a “highly regarded” teacher after he was tragically killed in a horror crash in Gippsland.

Glen Stephenson was riding his motorbike when he collided with a vehicle on Downies Lane in Traralgon South about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and stopped to help but Mr Stephenson died at the scene.

Mr Stephenson was a qualified teacher who taught information technology and science at Kurnai College’s Churchill campus.

He was also a year 9 team leader who supported students with their academic and social growth.

In a statement, principal Anthony Rodaughan said Mr Stephenson, who started working at the school in 2016, was loved by students, staff and parents.

“Glen was a loved and highly regarded member of our school community and we will miss his presence at our school,” he said.

“It is important that we remember and honour Glen in our own way, and that we support each other with feelings of sadness and upset that we may experience as well as remembering the happiness he brought to our school.”

Mr Stephenson’s older sister, Kelly Johnston, said her and her siblings’ hearts were “shattered”.

“Gleno always had a big smile on his face, an adventure in the works and a bike nearby,” she said in a Facebook post.

“He loved his wife Lisa and two dogs Diesel and Daisy more than anything in this world.”

“Our hearts are shattered and we treasure all the wonderful memories with you Gleno.”

Friend Ben Aarons said his mate, who was an avid motorcyclist, was a “lovely man” who always gave his time to others.

“He was always happy to engage with families and support others,” he said.

“He was a beautiful man and worked with hundreds in the community and his loss will be felt by many.

“The community has lost a wonderful human.”

Mr Rodaughan said the school informed students of Mr Stephenson’s death on Wednesday.

“School routine is important for all children, and we believe that your child’s attendance at school will be important over the coming days and weeks,” he said.

“If your child is experiencing a high level of distress, parents are best placed to be able to provide the nurture and care children need to manage their distress at this time and you may choose to keep your child home.”

Mr Stephenson leaves behind his wife Lisa.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident were yet to be determined.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
