Jaws dropped at The Source last night when football trade banter on social media took an unexpected turn.
Former Kangaroos star Wayne Carey — who is no stranger to the headlines — posted about what strategy a player should take when a new team member is brought on board to play in the same position.
“Nothing beats hard work”, he quipped.
But, of course, cheeky fans couldn’t resist winding Carey up asking why he left the North Melbourne team back in 2002.
Lightheartedly, the former Roo replied “Really?”, but plenty of savage social media users piled on, posting about Carey’s now infamous affair with Kelli Stevens, the former wife of North Melbourne champion Anthony Stevens.
Carey has publicly labelled it as “the biggest regret of my life as an adult”.
However, his response to the online ribbing definitely made some readers spit out their tea in surprise.
When an account called Bloody Bulldogs pointed out Carey was traded after sleeping with a teammate’s wife, the footy legend responded with “3 times”.
It’s not clear if he was admitting to having slept with one person three times, or slept with three teammates’ partners.
Regardless, it’s an off the cuff remark that will likely aggravate old wounds — especially for those personally involved in the saga.
The comments on Carey’s original post also didn’t stop at the cheating scandal.
Many people also joked Carey was really traded for taking too many “bags”, in reference to the Crown Casino incident when he dropped a bag of white powder that he claimed contained crushed up pain tablets.
The Source hopes Carey won’t regret the comment in the morning.
