Wayne Carey has spoken about his proudest moment watching his eldest child complete school.
The footy great believes it’s a family first for anyone to complete year 12.
His daughter Ella, 17, is set to graduate and go to university next year.
“I have had one of the proudest moments a father can have this morning,’’ Carey said on his The Truth Hurts podcast.
“I went to my beautiful daughter, Ella, who is 17, she’s about to go into her exams and about to graduate year 12. Her last assembly was this morning... it was unbelievable.
“It got me thinking — I reckon she’s the only Carey ever to pass year 12. I don’t think there has been a Carey I know... if I’ve got a cousin or a second cousin ... she’s going to uni, she’s going to La Trobe next year.”
Carey said Ella must have her mum Sally’s genes — she was an accountant.
Carey has a second daughter and a son.
“I’m just that proud because I finished year 11 which is very high for the Careys,’’ he said.
“My eldest brother, I think he was year 8, my younger brother not sure (maybe) year 7 or 8.
“My two sisters, Karen, the closest to me, she did year 12 but didn’t do the exam so she didn’t finish it. Older sister Shazza, I think she was year 9 or 10 but not all the way. Then I’ve got my nephews and other cousins, school wasn’t their go.”
Carey added that Ella was interested in osteo and physio.
“Clearly didn’t get my genes, it comes from her mother,’’ he said.
“Tomorrow they’re throwing the hats off the building. I thought I’d never be involved in something like that. A really emotional day for me. A proud day.... Ella might be the first Carey to pass year 12.”
