Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers.
He’s one of the highest paid presenters on Australian TV.
In fact, earlier this year, TV tradie Scott Cam, host of the home renovation reality hit The Block, signed another multiple year deal with Nine.
However, as the ratings and riches continue to roll in, Cam still watches every penny and stays connected to the tradie who one struggled to make ends meet.
“I started on television for the hourly rate because I had to feed my family,” Cam told The Source.
“I worked as a chippie for 10 years while I was on the telly. TV work was only part time. But it wasn’t bad coin. I really didn’t care about the other stuff (profile and celebrity).”
Twenty years on, with a hit show, and all the rewards that come with it, Cam hasn’t changed, and he credits wife Ann for keeping him grounded.
“We don’t throw food out, we eat it,” Cam said.
“Here’s another thing — she told me, every time you tap and go (to pay for items and services at an EFTPOS machine), it costs you 2.5 per cent. If you stick the card in the machine, it doesn’t cost you. If you buy something expensive, it really adds up.
“She’s told me I’m not allowed to tap anymore,” Cam said. “I had to put the card in the machine and use the PIN.”
He might be king of The Block, but clearly, Ann Cam is queen of the castle.
