Outgoing drink-drive MP Tim Smith has given a strong indication that he has fallen out with Victorian Liberal party leader and former close ally, Matthew Guy.
Speaking to Sky News’ Outsiders program on Sunday morning, Mr Smith was asked if he had felt betrayed by Mr Guy in the wake of crashing his car into a family home in Hawthorn.
The former shadow Attorney-General lost control of his Jaguar after having “too many” wines and recording a blood-alcohol level of 0.131 in October last year.
Mr Smith has kept a low public profile since announcing his decision to quit state politics at this year’s election.
But the once-outspoken Liberal attack dog appeared to confirm that his once-strong friendship with Mr Guy was now over.
Asked if he felt betrayed by the party’s leader, Mr Smith responded: “Well, my mother always taught me that if you’ve got nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.”
He was instrumental in last year’s leadership spill that saw Mr Guy topple Michael O’Brien to be reappointed to the top job.
Mr Smith also revealed he still harboured hopes of a career in politics.
“I’d love to have a future in politics. I’d like to have a voice,” he told Sky News.
“I really want to get back into the fray. I feel like I’ve got something to add.
“I know the Liberal party is teetering on the precipice and it needs to focus on the people that needs us … the people that Menzies set the party up to represent, and they don’t live in Toorak anymore.”
