A youth charged with mowing down a police officer outside a pub in an allegedly stolen car is withdrawing from drugs, his lawyer said.
Ringwood East man Eden Cavanagh-Reed, 20, is facing 10 charges including aggravated intentional exposure of police officer to risk by driving, possessing cannabis and methamphetamine following his arrest on Thursday.
It’s alleged he drove a stolen Honda Civic at “high speeds” in the car park of the Burvale
Hotel in Nunawading, striking a 27-year-old senior constable who was responding to the car theft report.
The officer was allegedly struck “front on” and thrown into the air upon impact.
He was hospitalised with serious upper body injuries.
Mr Cavanagh-Reed faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday where his lawyer told the court he was withdrawing from drugs, believed to be methamphetamine and GHB.
His mother watched the brief hearing via video link, telling the court her son suffers from borderline personality disorder.
“He seems to be quite good when he’s taking it (his medication) but I’m not sure if he has been,” the mother said.
The court heard a motor reconstructionist expert report would form part of the hand up brief.
Other evidence would include body worn footage, CCTV and DNA samples.
Among the other charges faced by Mr Cavanagh-Reed were failing to stop vehicle after an accident, failure to render assistance, drive in a dangerous manner, reckless conduct causing injury and careless driving.
Mr Cavanagh-Reed was remanded to reappear in court on August 30.
