Shocking dashcam footage has captured the moment a car plunged into four vehicles while trying to overtake another in Melbourne’s north.

The terrifying crash happened on Donnybrook Rd in Kalkallo about 6.45pm on Sunday.

It’s understood a red car tried to recklessly overtake another after the roundabout but lost control and plunged into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

This caused the car to smash into the one it tried to pass and rebound into the roadside barrier.

The red car went on to further strike two more vehicles until it came to a halt.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the driver, a 25-year-old Officer man, returned a positive preliminary breath test before being taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

He is expected to be charged with drink-driving and other traffic related offences.

Mill Park mum Caitlin Griffin and her husband Jordan captured the carnage from their car dashcam.

“At first, we heard the screeching of the tyres and thought someone was doing a burnout but it wasn’t until we heard the second bang we realised it was a car accident,” she said.

“We didn’t realise how bad it was until we played the footage back.

“The more we watched it, the crazier it became.”

Mrs Griffin said her husband, who is a nurse at Austin Health, jumped out of his car to help the motorists involved.

“It was absolutely terrifying as I watched it happen in the rearview mirror,” she said.

“It was honestly like a dodgem car, the car just kept going.”

Mrs Griffin said the other motorists involved weren’t injured but were “shaken up”.

“Thankfully, my nine-month-old wasn’t in the car,” she said.

“If we had been the car behind us, it would have hit us where his car seat sits.”
